Annual Youth Fishing Day is Sunday in Franklin

It’s the perfect opportunity for youth to experience the great outdoors.

The Pohopoco Rod and Gun Club will hold its 12th Annual Youth Fishing Day from 8 a.m. to noon Sunday at Phifer’s Ice Dam in Franklin Township.

The event is open to any youth 15 and younger.

“We hope this encourages more interest in outdoor activities, and also a stronger bond with their parents or caregivers,” said Jim Deebel, president of the Pohopoco Rod and Gun Club.

Deebel said that each youth will receive a hot dog and drink. Other refreshments will be available for purchase, and a basket raffle will be held as well.

He said the Pohopoco Rod and Gun Club is purchasing the trout to be stocked, including some large fish.

Deebel said participants may take home their catch or practice catch and release.

He added there is no charge to participate, and many lucky anglers may receive a free gift.

“We’ve received a lot of support from the community,” Deebel said. “We have dozens of sponsors who have helped.”

Deebel said that last year’s event had 79 youth participate, a figure he anticipates will be even higher this time around as both ponds will be utilized.

“We’re trying to get kids interested in the outdoors,” he said. “We’re thankful to the township for allowing us to use this facility to let the kids enjoy the outdoors.”

Deebel said the Pohopoco Rod and Gun Club meets at 7 p.m. the third Wednesday of each month.

He said anyone who would like to become a member may call 610-844-8369.
