Lehighton Band presenting spring concert
The Lehighton Band is presenting its annual spring concert at 2 p.m. April 22 at the First Presbyterian Church, 3rd and Mahoning streets, Lehighton.
The free concert will open with John Moffit’s arrangement of “The Star Spangled Banner.”
This year’s concert contains three marches by three different composers. Its opening march is “The Chimes of Liberty” by Edwin Franko Goldman.
That will be followed by the overture for the afternoon, “Morning, Noon and Night in Vienna” by Franz Von Suppe. This overture has become a standard for many bands, and the Lehighton Band has played it in many concerts over the years.
“Satchmo!” (a tribute to Louis Armstrong) will be the band’s next selection. This piece of music was donated to the band by one of the band’s flutists, Jennifer Mann. It’s a great selection of songs that made Armstrong famous including “What a Wonderful World,” “When the Saints Go Marching In,” “St. Louis Blues” and “Hello Dolly!”
That will be followed by a concert band staple, James Swearingen.
The second march of the afternoon will be “The Fairest of the Fair” by John Philip Sousa, which will lead the band to its Broadway portion of the concert.
Its opening number will feature the band’s soloist for the afternoon. Laura Reichard will move from the flute section to be its vocal soloist and will perform “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Miserables.
Reichard is the organist at both Zion UCC and First Presbyterian churches in Lehighton. Reichard is the Junior High Music teacher and band and chorus director at Palmerton Area School District. She has performed many lead roles with Zion Opera Workshop including “Mary Poppins,” “Millie Dilmount” and “Wednesday Addams.” This arrangement for concert band and vocalist was artfully created by Michael Brown.
The band, staying on “the Great White Way,” will present Selections From Dear Evan Hansen which includes “Waving Through a Window,” “For Forever” and “You Will Be Found.”
The final Broadway number is the “Overture to The Addams Family Musical.”
Many of the members of the band are also involved with the local theater group, Zion Opera Zion Opera Workshop who put this play on their stage in 2022. It includes “The Addams Family Theme,” “Overture,” “When You’re an Addams,” and “Move Toward the Darkness.”
The Pop section of the concert includes Billy Joel and Concert which features the artists hits, “Movin’ Out,” “Piano Man,” “Only the Good Die Young,” and “Just the Way You Are.”
Its second number is entitled Eighties Flashback and includes the 80s hits “Thriller,” “Time After Time,” “Eye of the Tiger,” “Up Where We Belong” and “You Give Love a Bad Name.”
James Swearingen will once again be featured with his arrangement of Irving Berlin’s songs for America which includes “This the Army Mr. Jones,” “Give me Your Tired,” “Your Poor,” “This is a Great Country” and “God Bless America.”
The final march for the concert is Karl King’s “The Melody Shop March.”
The Lehighton Band is under the direction of Bradly R. Cressley.
The concert is free to the public but a free will offering will be accepted.
The donation will go toward the purchase of new music as well as upkeep of the band hall.
