Hidden in the woods, faux Bigfoot draws gawkers

Jeannie Carl heard that Bigfoot was lurking along Lentz Trail just outside of Jim Thorpe.

And while it wasn’t a live one, Carl - the naturalist for the Carbon County Environmental Education Center - just had to see it.

The location of the cutout of the mythical creature - often referred to as a Sasquatch - had her stumped.

“I had been trying to find him. Twice I drove by like a snail,” Carl said.

Even with an idea of the approximate location, the Sasquatch remained elusive.

Finally, Carl spotted it.

“I saw it and said, ‘Oh, there you are,’” she said.

The sighting brought a smile to Carl, and she can easily find it now - even though it’s quite a distance from the road and hidden in the trees.

She learned about it thanks to a Facebook post from Denise Sebelin, of Deezine’s Flowers and Gifts in Jim Thorpe.

“I was driving and I happened to see it out of the corner of my eye,” Sebelin said. “I just thought it was so funny.”

Her social media post, she said, received quite a few “likes.”

But does Carl, who deals with nature each day on her job, believe in Bigfoot?

“I definitely believe that there are a lot of things we haven’t discovered yet,” she said. “I really don’t think that it is out of the realm of possibility. There is so much that we don’t understand, so much that we don’t know, so I’m not going to say it’s impossible. There are things out there that we have yet to discover, so yes, it is possible.”

As for a Bigfoot in Jim Thorpe?

“In the area, I don’t think we have the habitat for it - unless he likes waterfalls and train rides,” Carl laughed. “Maybe he would blend in with the tourists.”

Of course, sightings of the creature have been reported for years.

The Big Foot Field Researchers Organization was founded in 1995, and keeps track of them, and even hosts walks in areas where there have been rumors of them.

According to data on the group’s website, Washington state has the most sightings with 710, followed by California with 461 and Florida with 339.

In Pennsylvania, the group notes 126 Bigfoot encounters, with the most recent from Indiana County in December.

“The tracks were similar to human tracks, but different. The thing that was most apparent to me was the distance between the foot prints, which approximately 4-feet apart,” according to that report.

Two months earlier, two witnesses reported seeing a Sasquatch on a trail in Cambria County.

“He was walking along the trail toward us. We couldn’t see his face. When he saw us he turned and quickly walked into the woods,” according to the account.

The organization received no reports from Carbon County.
