Lehighton borough appoints junior councilor

A program to get youth engaged in the community is back in full swing in Lehighton borough.

Earlier this month, borough council appointed Adam Sebelin as a junior councilor. Sebelin is a junior at Lehighton Area High School.

The Junior Council Person Program is offered through the Pennsylvania State Association of Boroughs.

Guidelines to become a junior councilor are as follows:

• Must be a borough resident.

• Must be a high school junior or senior.

• Must take an “oath of office.”

• Must serve a one- or two-year term to coincide with the school year.

• Must attend monthly borough council meetings, budget sessions and other “special” meetings.

• Must be seated on the council, participating in any and all business.

• Must observe all borough council meeting rules.

Council had previously passed a resolution to participate in the Junior Council Person Program.

Any students who would like to participate in the program should write a letter of interest to borough council.

Council’s last junior councilor had been Grant Schaeffer in 2019 until COVID started.
