Bomb discovered by crews putting out brush fire

A bomb was discovered when fire crews were putting out a brush fire in the Dutch Hill section of Tamaqua Wednesday night, borough police said.

Tamaqua police and the Tamaqua Fire Department were dispatched to the fire in the area of Clark and Biddle streets at 9:50 p.m.

Police said that at approximately 10:15 p.m., South Ward Fire Company Chief Mark Bower was clearing the scene and found what appeared to be a homemade bomb.

Also on hand was Jacob Novitsky, a fire forester from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. According to police, Novitsky advised officers that he already sent a dispatch for the Pennsylvania State Police bomb squad.

At around 11:04 p.m., police said a federal agent from the Federal Bureau of Investigation bomb squad and the Allentown State Police Bomb Squad arrived. The area was cleared and at midnight, a successfully controlled detonation of the bomb was initiated.

Police said no one was injured.
