The Carbon County Elections office is back in operation after a sprinkler leak flooded the office last Monday.
The leak forced the county to move the elections office to the second floor of 44 Susquehanna St. until the floor dried out and the insurance adjuster completed his assessment of work needed to resolve the issue.
Commissioner Rocky Ahner today said that the county moved back into the office Friday and that verifying of voting machines began today.
Commissioners’ Chairman Wayne Nothstein said that the main damage was in the conference room on the first floor, where ceiling tiles came down.
But overall, the county was very fortunate because it didn’t damage the voting machines.
He said that some of the protective bags had a little water on them but overall, the damage was mostly to the carpeting in other areas of the office.
“It wasn’t good when I walked down there and saw the water coming out the front door,” Nothstein said, adding that the building is the newly renovated building.
Ahner said that once the adjuster completed his assessment, the county will have a clearer picture, however he feels the carpet will need to be replaced.
In the time being, Commissioner Chris Lukasevich said that four meetings that use the conference room at 44 - Ag Land, Planning Commission, Animal Shelter Advisory Commission and Council of Governments - will be temporarily relocated to the commissioners’ conference room in the administration building.
