A Nesquehoning road that has become a site for illegal dumping is getting a makeover.
Last week, Councilwoman Abbie Guardiani announced that the owner of the property off Industrial Road, where dumping has been occurring, will be cleaning up their property, but the borough must do its part to help clean the borough owned portion closest to the roadway.
That’s why, Guardiani is using Earth Day as the start of a Nesquehoning Borough Community Cleanup.
“The edges of the roadway are horrendous,” she said, noting that this road is a beautiful place to walk.
On April 22, volunteers can meet at the Nesquehoning Conservation Club pond, located just off the Y between Park Avenue and Industrial Road in the Hauto Valley Estates, at 9 a.m.
Gloves, safety vests and garbage bags will be provided to anyone who helps. If you have a trash picker or grabber, you are urged to bring it with you.
Guardiani said that the cleanup will take place from the soccer field to Dennison Road.
Volunteers should wear appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear because there will be some high grass and possible damp or muddy conditions.
Guardiani said all are welcome and added that she hopes this will be a success.
Councilman Lou Paul suggested it becomes an annual event where the town picks a different road every year to host a community cleanup.
Once the trash is collected, volunteers can take the bags to the borough garage, where they will be taken to Tamaqua Transfer for disposal.
For questions, contact the borough office at 570-669-9588. There is no need to register for the cleanup.
In the event of rain, a rain date has been scheduled for April 29.
In other Industrial Road matters, council announced the property owner has installed a camera and will monitor the area for people dumping on the property; anyone caught dumping will be prosecuted to the full extend of the law.
