One dead, several injured in Rt. 61 crash

One person died and seven others were injured in a two-vehicle crash that happened at 5:41 p.m. Friday on Route 61 in Palo Alto Borough.

State police at Schuylkill Haven said Iesha D. Colon, 29, of Steelton, a passenger in one of the vehicles, died at the scene.

Injured were: Deborah E. Fritzinger, 66, of Port Carbon, the driver of one of the vehicles, and six passengers in the other vehicle, including Alberto Colon, 56, and Patricia Colon, 19, both of Pottsville, and four juveniles, ages 8, 10, 13 and 14. All of the victims were transported by Schuylkill Valley EMS personnel to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Pottsville.

Police said the 8-year-old suffered serious injuries while Fritzinger and the five other passengers suffered minor injuries.

Samantha M. Colon, 33, of Pottsville, the other driver involved in the crash, was uninjured, police said.

Police said the crash happened when she was driving a 2006 Acura MDX southbound when she lost control of the vehicle, causing it to engage in a slide and cross over the raised median into the northbound lane where it struck a northbound 2019 Chevrolet Trax driven by Fritzinger.

Police said both vehicles proceeded off the travel lanes, with the Acura becoming wedged in an embankment on its passenger side, facing south. The Trax came to a halt on the right shoulder of the road, facing west.

Police were assisted at the scene by the Pottsville Fire Department, Yorkville Fire and Rescue Squad, Good Intent Fire Company, Schuylkill EMS, the Schuylkill County Coroner’s Office and area fire police.
