A Lehighton man who attempted to flee the scene of a one-vehicle crash on Saturday at 6:35 p.m. on Mahoning Drive East in Mahoning Township was detained by an off-duty police officer who was a witness to the crash.

State police at Lehighton said the 41-year-old man, who is facing charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, was driving a 2023 Mazda CX-5 westbound when he drove off the north shoulder of the road.

The car struck a concrete/rock wall at 1246 Mahoning Drive East, then spun multiple times, striking a utility pole before ending in the yard at 1296 Mahoning Drive East.

Police said the man exited the vehicle and fled but was quickly detained by the off-duty officer.
