Marian Catholic high school students to start garden

A group of Marian Catholic High School students is looking to help serve and bring the community together through a school garden.

The garden will be maintained by students, and serve as a grounds for vegetables, herbs and other greenery that will be sold at the school and at the Hometown Farmers Market. All proceeds will return to the garden group for improvements and more greenery.

The project is under the direction of sophomore English and senior AP Literature teacher Janet Whalen, and is part of the Schuylkill County Leadership Committee.

Marian’s Leadership team hopes to complete the project by summer. They’ll be helping to facilitate the organization, and will be responsible for production and upkeep of the garden.

Whalen said the project allows students to learn positive outdoor experiences, outdoor classroom management, multitasking and professional learning.

Students from the school’s STEM classes will build the planting boxes for the garden.

Any donations of seeds or soil is appreciated. Dedicated alumni benches are also available for donations.
