West Penn buying new Tasers for police department

West Penn Township has agreed to buy Tasers for its police department.

On a 2-1 vote, supervisors on Monday approved the purchase of five new Tasers at a cost of $14,483 for 60 months at a yearly cost of $2,897 with the trade of the old ones.

Supervisor Glenn Hummel said he was opposed due to budgetary reasons.

Township police Chief Jim Bonner asked for them because the department has two different types of Tasers, and after about five to six years, they lose their power.

Bonner said that without having different Tasers, the cartridges are not interchangeable, and are not reliable.

The company will buy the police department’s old Tasers back.
