Bears have six wrestlers alive in 3A
BETHLEHEM - If there’s one team that Pleasant Valley wrestlers wouldn’t mind avoiding on Day Two of the District 11 3A wrestling tournament, it might be Parkland.
Three PV wrestlers advanced to Friday’s quarterfinal round at Liberty’s Memorial Gymnasium - and all three fell to Trojans in subsequent fashion.
It was a night that head coach Ross Nunamaker knows his team will need to regroup from when action gets underway this morning with the second round of consolations.
“I was kidding with [Parkland coach] Jon [Trenge] to stop messing with my kids,” Nunamaker joked. “We ended up with some tough seeds and our guys just have to reset. From here on out, it’s one-and-done, so they’ve got to refocus if they want to make it to regionals.”
The top five wrestlers in each weight class advance to next week’s Northeast Regional tournament with Eddie Lauritsen (121), Jason Schubert (189) and Andrew Mihalichko (285) leading the charge for the Bears.
Each one advanced to the quarterfinals before dropping their matches to aforementioned Parkland wrestlers, leading off with Lauritsen’s 17-1 tech fall defeat to Adam Ciampittello in 2:41.
Schubert then got pinned by top-seed Adrian Gacek in 1:10, followed by Michael Gavrilesku’s fall over Mihalichko in 2:31.
“The fact we had three kids in the quarters was pretty good,” Nunamaker said. “We’ve got a young team, so we feel good in that regard, but we want to see how these guys respond after they lose. The big thing is that they’re starting to build their confidence.”
That confidence may need to be restored after a tough quarterfinal round, but Nunamaker doesn’t think the results from Friday evening will have a hangover for his trio.
After wrestling the likes of Bethlehem Catholic, Parkland, Nazareth, Freedom and Emmaus during the regular season, this group of Bears have seen the best of District 11. Now they need to show their best on Saturday to extend their season another week.
“Saturday is going to be the real trial for these guys,” said Nunamaker. “I told our guys we’ve seen all these kids this year. There’s nothing new here. Every weight class is tough and ultimately they have to battle through it. These kids haven’t had the smoothest ride over the past three years.
“It’s the third coaching staff in three years, third Athletic Director in three years, so it hasn’t been easy, but they’re still here and they want to be a part of it.”
Pleasant Valley suited up 10 wrestlers for this weekend’s tournament and have six wrestlers alive on Saturday. Outside of the three already mentioned, Michael Pomilio (114), Aldin Vukal (152) and Jimmy Barruzza (215) all bounced back from preliminary round losses to win their first round consolation bouts Friday night.
As expected, Bethlehem Catholic (138 points) and Nazareth (131.5) are running away with the team points. The Hawks have 12 of their 13 wrestlers in the semifinals, while Nazareth has 11 of 12 in the semis. Easton (93 points), Northampton (91.5) and Parkland (80) round out the top five in the team standings.
Should any Bears advance to the consolation medal round, action gets underway at 3 p.m. for the third and fifth place matches. Championship finals for both 2A and 3A take place at 4:45 p.m.
