Tamaqua replacing purple-tinted lights

Streetlights in Tamaqua have been glowing purple - something caused by a manufacturer’s defect.

Borough Manager Kevin Steigerwalt said the faulty bulbs are being replaced.

“Our streetlight replacement project was going on there for a few weeks,” Steigerwalt told borough council members this week.

“We got quite a few of the purple streetlights replaced.”

Steigerwalt said the borough knows that there are “many more” to be done.

At the moment, however, the project is on hold.

“We’re just waiting for more of the replacement lights,” Steigerwalt said.

The company that installed the lights is replacing them at no cost, he said.

“If any others turn purple in the meantime, they will take care of those as well,” Steigerwalt said.

In an unrelated matter, Steigerwalt updated council on a $5.06 million Pennsylvania Department of Transportation project that includes milling and paving on Routes 209 and 309, along with sidewalks accessible to those with disabilities.

The project’s contractor, Kriger Construction, recently completed the sidewalk accessibility portion.

“They pulled out for the time being. They will be back to do the milling and the paving on 209 from Coaldale to here and also they will be paving the north end of Route 309,” Steigerwalt said.

He said that the Route 209 work will be done during the daytime hours, while Route 309 will be tackled in the evening.

PennDOT estimates completion by the end of August.

In police news, council accepted a letter of resignation from part-time police officer Nicole Deliz.

Council approved a request to send Sgt. Thomas Rodgers and Officer Andrew Seip to a firearms and patrol rifle training course at the Allentown Police Academy in April at a cost of $400 per officer.

Christopher Cordes will attend the 2023 Street Cop Training Conference in Nashville, Tennessee, from April 23-28 at a cost of $1,049.

In other business, council:

• Approved handicapped parking space applications for 424 Pine St. and 111 Coal St.

• Adopted an ordinance prohibiting parking on portions of Glenwood Avenue and South Railroad Street.

• Voted to retain Eric Nelson as a full-time water distribution worker and Joseph Behun as a full-time water treatment plant work leader.

• Appointed Jonathan Hadesty to a vacant position on the Tamaqua Planning Commission.
