Winterfest draws crowds to Jim Thorpe

Large crowds of people, and some pets, enjoyed strolling along the sidewalks this weekend for the 30th Annual Winterfest in historic Jim Thorpe.

They enjoyed visiting the local businesses, and having a chance to view the beautiful Victorian-era architecture around town.

The Carbon County parking lot as well as other smaller lots, were filled to capacity both days.

Visitors from near and far came to visit Jim Thorpe.

“Today (February 18th) is my 65th birthday,” Elaine Stoltzfus of Lancaster County exclaimed. She was visiting with friends Elaine Eckman of Lancaster County, Helen Zimmerman of Hershey and Kathy Eckman of Manheim.

“(Helen) was here before, and everyone decided to bring me here for my birthday treat,” Stoltzfus said.

People had the chance to take rides on the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway, the Crystal View Horse and Carriage, and the Jim Thorpe Trolley Company.

Hot food and drink were available in Josiah White Park from The Doggie Wagon, and Gary Wagner’s food stand. Carmella’s Italian Pastries of Scranton had mouth-watering baked goods.

Jim Thorpe is home to a variety of specialty shops, galleries, and museums, as well as pubs and restaurants. Most saw a brisk business throughout the weekend.

One of the favorite events for the weekend was the annual Mug Walk.

People pre-ordered their mugs, then picked them up at the visitors center at the train station. All were given a passport that had a list of stores where they could visit for special gifts and discounts. Once they had the list checked off, they turned in the passports where winners of special prizes were chosen.

There were no ice carvers this weekend, although ice sculptures were on display in the gazebo in Josiah White Park and outside Muggles Mug on Broadway.

Winterfest is the first big event for Jim Thorpe for 2023.
