Schuylkill choral festival starts Wednesday

The Tamaqua Area Vocal Music Department will host the 2023 Schuylkill County Choral Festival Wednesday through Saturday.

The festival, an annual four-day event, will conclude Saturday with a 2 p.m. concert for the public in the Tamaqua Area Auditorium.

This year’s Schuylkill County Chorus is comprised of 110 students in eighth through 12th grades from 13 participating county schools.

Students were selected to participate in the festival through a competitive vocal audition held at the Schuylkill Haven Area High School in October.

The festival host is John D. Buglio, Tamaqua Area High School choral director, and the chorus will be under the direction of Dr. Mark Mecham, retired director of choral studies at Lebanon Valley College in Lebanon. Mecham has served as guest conductor for many county, district, region and state choral festivals throughout the United States and abroad.

The program will offer a wide array of the best in choral music selections. The chorus will sing “Bonse Aba,” “Achieved is the Glorious Work,” “Ave Maria,” “Choose Something Like a Star,” “Sixteen Tons,” “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” “American Folk Rhapsody,” “The Alphabet Song” and conclude with “Ev’ry Time I Feel the Spirit.”

Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens. Tickets may be purchased at the door. Doors to the auditorium will open at 1:15 p.m.
