Palmerton police chief gets salary increase

Palmerton has greenlighted an agreement with the head of its police department.

On a 6-0 vote, borough council on Monday approved a one-year contract with borough police Chief Tim Kromer.

The agreement calls for Kromer to receive a salary of $89,870, borough Manager Donna McGarry said.

McGarry said there are no other changes in the contract.

She said Kromer is allowed to accumulate up to 40 hours of comp time.

The decision comes after council in July granted Kromer a salary increase following his review.

At that time, council on a 6-0 vote approved a $3,000 increase.

Additionally, council at that time approved an increase in Kromer’s allowance for compensatory time from 40 hours to 50 hours until the end of the year.

In October, council hired Kromer as police chief, effective Jan. 1.

Council at its reorganization meeting in January 2022 set Kromer’s salary at $83,000.

Kromer replaced former police Chief Randy Smith, who retired.

Kromer was hired as a part-time officer in May 2002, and has been a full-time officer since December 2002.
