Four people were taken to St. Luke’s Miners Campus in Coaldale following a two-vehicle crash at 8:39 a.m. Monday in Tamaqua, borough police said.
Police said Dorothy Schmerfeld of Tamaqua, was traveling south on Route 309 and failed to stop at a red light at the Elm Street intersection. Her vehicle struck the driver’s side of a vehicle being driven east on Elm Street by Katie McGowan of Tamaqua.
Upon impact, McGowan’s vehicle flipped onto its passenger side and slid about 15 feet before it came to rest.
Police said the initial call reported that two people were trapped in McGowan’s vehicle, but upon arrival, all occupants were out.
McGowan told police she was “shook up,” and a male passenger complained of neck pain. The two, and a child who was in a booster seat, were taken to the Coaldale hospital by Tamaqua EMS. Schmerfeld said she had leg pain and was transported by Lehighton EMS.
Both vehicles were towed from the scene, police said.
Witnesses reported that Schmerfeld did not stop at the red light. She will be cited for a red light violation, police said.
The Tamaqua Fire Department and Tamaqua Fire Police assisted at the scene.
