Lansford to vacate part of Tunnel Street

Lansford borough is vacating a portion of Tunnel Street.

“Four years ago, Lansford Borough Council passed an ordinance to vacate part of Tunnel Street,” Borough Solicitor Robert Yurchak said. “For whatever reason, the ordinance was never filed, and the deeds never given to the owners.”

To vacate the property the borough has to give up ownership of the property.

The section of road is the paved part of Tunnel Street that begins at West Water Street, approximately 80 x 25 feet.

The normal procedure is to offer it to the adjoining land owners.

According to Yurchak and the Carbon County GIS map, Timothy Smith owns the properties on both sides of the paved portion of Tunnel Street.

The agreement for the deed would allow a right of way for Paul Kokinda to access his property that is just past Smith’s.

Borough Council passed the motion to property vacate the section of Tunnel Street.

Police report

For the month of January, Lansford police responded to 239 calls, 68 parking issues, made 16 arrests, with a total of 36 violations, according to Mayor Hugh Vrablic.

“I think that’s pretty significant,” Vrablic said. “They’re really cracking down more and more.”

The Lansford police took in $3,452.47 in parking violations, magistrate fees and other items.

Holiday schedule

Lansford Borough secretaries want to change their holiday schedule.

A motion was made to adjust the amount of federal holidays for the borough secretaries to match what the other borough workers have.

“We noticed that the Sewer Authority and the Water Authority are closed on other federal holidays,” Borough Secretary Wendy Butrie said.

“We’re the only one open. We looked at the borough workers’ contracts, and they’re not working. So we decided to ask for our holidays to match their holidays.”

Several council members wanted more time to look at the issue. The motion was tabled with no decision made.
