Palmerton Girl Scouts having ‘Souper Bowl’

While others will spend this weekend preparing for the big game, a group of Palmerton area Girl Scouts will quietly do their part to collect items for their local food bank.

Palmerton Girl Scout Service Unit 728 will be at Country Harvest Family Market in Palmerton to collect canned goods Friday through Sunday as part of its “Souper Bowl” drive.

Service unit manager Patti Green said a troop will be there from 1 p.m. until closing on Friday, 11 a.m. until closing on Saturday, and 11 a.m. until closing on Sunday.

Green said that at 6:30 p.m. Monday, the troop will be at St. John Lutheran Church along Fireline Road unloading the trailer for the Christian Action Council of Palmerton Area Churches.

She said the unit has 119 girls and 65 volunteers in Palmerton.

“Last year, we collected 1,488 items; hoping to beat that this year,” Green said. “Last known record was recorded in 2011.”

Green said that for the past 12 years, they have collected 28,189 items of food.
