PTO meeting

The Pleasant Valley Elementary School PTO is slated to meet from 4 to 5 p.m. today.

Prayer service

Our Lady Queen of Peace church is holding a brief prayer service in honor of St. Josephine Bakhita, the patron saint of victims of human trafficking.

Legion Auxiliary

The February meeting of the American Legion Auxiliary will be at 7 p.m. today. Guests are welcome.

WE Rotary

The Rotary Club of the West End meets in the Community room of the West End Community Library in Brodheadsville at 7:30 a.m., with the first Thursday being the board meeting. Second Thursday is the club’s field trip day.

All other Thursdays are general meetings. Guests are invited to join for any of the meetings according to a Web page posting.

Missions meal

Tomorrow, at 4:30 p.m., the West End Missions group will again serve a meal at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church.

Board meets

The Pleasant Valley Board of Education will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Administrative Building.

League meeting

The West End Little League board of directors is slated to meet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, at the Chestnuthill Township Park in Brodheadsville.

It is a closed meeting.

The public meeting is slated to take place next week Thursday, also at 7:30 p.m. and at the Chestnuthill Park.

PV Spirit Day

The PV schools celebrate Spirit day every Friday.

Friday Fun set

St. Matthew’s UCC, Kunkletown, is having a Friday Fun Night from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The folks attending will have a meal which they themselves will pay for and then bake, decorate and bag cookies for congregation and nursing home residents. They will also make cards which will be given out on Sunday.

Church family sign-up is required. Call 610-381-2442 for information if needed.

Spanish Charismatic

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church hosts a Spanish Charismatic Group at 6:30 p.m. every Friday in the Cafe.

All are welcome.

Breakfast served

McMichaels UMC is holding a donation-only breakfast, from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday. It is a full breakfast with beverages, too.

Pantry open

The Supplemental Food Resource Center at Effort United Methodist Church will be open from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Spaghetti pickup

Those who ordered a spaghetti takeout dinner from Salem-St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Kresgeville are reminded dinners should be picked up between 4 and 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

Sweetheart dance

The Knights of Columbus at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church are sponsoring a Valentine dinner dance on Saturday.

It will feature a buffet style dinner and includes DJ music.

One can purchase tickets in the atrium after Mass or at the parish office. Tickets will not be sold at the door.

Post 927 special

Members of Legion Post 927 and their guests will celebrate a Valentine’s Day dinner special on Saturday. Reservations are required.

Sign-up must be done at the Post.

Polk Supervisors

The board of supervisors for Polk Township will meet at 9 a.m. tomorrow for a general meeting at the Kresgeville township building.

Souper Bowl Day

Various area churches are celebrating Souper Bowl Sunday on Feb. 12.

Salem-St. Paul’s, Kresgeville, will celebrate the day at both the 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship services.

Foods brought for those services will be given to the PVEN food pantry. The pantry needs such items as cereal, tuna, pasta sauce, cake mix and frosting and mashed potatoes.

St. Matthew’s UCC, Kunkletown, is also asking folks to bring in cans of soup to donate to the West End Pantry and PVEN.

And the church is receiving cash donations for folks to vote for their favorite team. Said donations will be placed in the pertinent team-named container

In addition, the church is holding about the soup sale. It is open to the community. Orders may be placed by calling the church at 610-381-2442.

Effort UMC will have soup pots in the narthex for donations of canned goods such as canned fruit, canned pasta, canned vegetables, canned sauces, etc. and non-perishables.

The church will also have a little competition involving the teams who will be playing in this year’s Super Bowl. Each soup pot will have a team name so folks can vote for the favorite by placing a donation in that particular pot. Donations should be in by Sunday.

Emergency rentals

Pocono Mountains United Way has announced that as of Feb. 1 “the Monroe County Emergency Rental Assistance Program will no longer be accepting further applications. Those in need of housing assistance are encouraged to call 2-1-1 from any phone to register for support, or PoconoInfo for housing resource referrals (570-517-3954). While Monroe County is no longer accepting further ERAP applications, it continues to work on earlier applications as funding and resources allow.

Riders meeting

Post 927 Legion Riders will be meeting at 10:30 a.m. Sunday. Guests are welcome.

Community supper

A Community Supper will again be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church.

The two youth groups at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, The Teens of Peace (9th through 12th grade), and Living 4:12 (7th and 8th grade) are involved in the preparation under the guidance/direction of Dori Hurley.

Bingo time

The Monday night open-to-community bingo time at the American Legion in Gilbert begins at 6:30 p.m. with card sales and play time begins at 7 p.m.

Effort Women

The Women’s Group of Effort UMC will be meeting at 7 p.m., Monday.

PV Planning

The Pleasant Valley School District Planning meeting is set for 7 p.m. Monday.

Breakfast coming

Effort UMC’s fellowship breakfast will be held on Feb. 19 instead of Feb. 12.

PV Diversity

The Pleasant Valley School District Diversity Group will meet at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Knit & Crochet

Zion Lutheran Church’s Knit & Crochet group will be meeting to work those needles with stitches of love, beginning at 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Free supper

Once again, Zion Lutheran in Brodheadsville will be offering a free community supper via drive-in on Feb. 15, beginning at 5 p.m. It will include ham, scalloped potatoes, a veggie, salad and dessert.

C’hill Planning mtg.

The Chestnuthill Township Planning Commission will meet at 7 p.m. next Wednesday.

Ash Wednesday

McMichaels UMC will have an Ash Wednesday service at 6 p.m. with ashes.

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Brodheadsville, will have the following services on Ash Wednesday: 8 a.m., Mass & ash distribution; 12:10 p.m.: Mass & ash distribution; 4 p.m.: Brief Service & ash distribution; 5:30 p.m.: brief service & ash distribution; 7 p.m.: Mass & ash distribution.

Salem-St. Paul’s Lutheran, Kresgeville, will have Ash Wednesday services at 1 and 7 p.m.

Zion Lutheran, Brodheadsville, will again offer Ashes-to-Go at 8 a.m. and at 4 p.m. in the parking lot of the church.

There will also be an Ash Wednesday service in the church at 7:30 p.m.

WE Dems meet

The West End Democratic Club is slated to meet at 7 p.m., Feb. 23, at the West End Firehouse in Brodheadsville.

Scout pet project

Girl Scout Troop #52333 is collecting dry and wet cans/bags of dog, cat, puppy and kitten food, pet toys and pet treats for the Pocono Pet Pantry in Monroe County through March 11. Anyone willing to donate, as members of Effort UMC, may bring their items to the church. Emma Wichman and Danielle Binkley are doing this as a Girl Scout project and will be picking items up each week. Items may be placed in the box in the narthex.

Others may support these Girl Scouts by placing donations in the appropriate bins, collection buckets, whatever at Tractor Supply in Brodheadsville, Kunkletown General Store, PV Intermediate School, Towamensing Elementary or even at the Moose Lodge in East Stroudsburg, according to Troop Leader Amy Binkley.

Job opening

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church has a job opening for a bilingual (Spanish & English speaking) secretary. This is a part-time position which will only require two days of work a week-Friday and Saturday. Almost Spring event

The Pleasant Valley High School Class of 2024 will be hosting the Almost Spring Craft & Vendor Fair on March 4, in the New Gym from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is free, and the concession stand will be open.

Sweet syrup days

Monroe County Conservation District’s Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center is sponsors Public Maple Sugaring Days on the first two Saturdays of March.

Featured is a 90-minute tour of the sugarbush focusing on the history of maple syrup from the Native Americans to the early settlers in this region.

Attendees will complete the educational tour at the pancake station where the finished product is served over freshly made pancakes.

Preregistration is required by calling 570-629-3061. Participants may choose a time from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for their 90-minute tour.

There is a cost. To get the amount, register and get directions, call 570-629-3061.

Those who sponsor a tree may attend for free.
