The Pleasant Valley School Board approved changing its policy regarding child protection clearances for volunteers during the meeting on Thursday night.
The change to Policy 916 involves dropping the Federal Criminal History report done through the Federal Bureau of Investigation for some potential volunteers.
People who have been a resident of Pennsylvania for more than 10 years no longer have to get the FBI background check done, but it is still required for those in the state for less than 10 years. This is in line with the Pennsylvania Department of Education’s policies.
According to the PDE website, the Federal Criminal History Record is not required for volunteers who are unpaid and have been residents of the state for the previous 10 years.
Volunteers who fall into this category “must swear or affirm in writing that they are not disqualified from service based upon a conviction of an offense.”
Pleasant Valley School District still requires potential volunteers to get the Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Certification and the Pennsylvania State Police Criminal History record check, complete an arrest and conviction report and certification form, and get tested for tuberculosis.
