Local Roundup: Results from Jan. 24

The Tamaqua boys basketball team cruised to a win over Lehighton Tuesday, while its swim teams swept Schuylkill Haven.

Other winners included Jim Thorpe, Northern Lehigh and Northwestern in girls basketball action.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Lehighton-Tamaqua

Noah Mateyak scored a game-high 19 points as Tamaqua rolled to a 59-24 Schuylkill League victory over Lehighton.

The win was the largest by the Blue Raiders since they downed Panther Valley 64-29 on Dec. 27, 2016.

Mason Ligenza also finished with 13 points for Tamaqua, which used a 20-7 second quarter to gain a sizable lead.

The Indians received a team-high 10 points from Cole Dietz.

After starting the season 0-4, the Raiders are now just a game under .500 at 8-9. They also improved to 4-6 in the league. Lehighton, meanwhile, dropped to 8-10 and 3-7.

In the JV game, the Tribe earned a 49-36 win.

Panther Valley-Blue Mountain

Blue Mountain turned a fast start into a 56-32 Schuylkill League victory over Panther Valley.

Carson Kerstetter had 18 points for the Eagles, who led 41-12 at halftime and snapped a two-game losing streak. Brogan Campbell hit four 3s and finished with 14 points.

Stephen Hood’s nine points led the Panthers.

Blue Mountain is now 13-5 overall and 8-2 in the league, while PV slipped to 9-7 and 3-7.

Notre Dame-Northwestern

Notre Dame upped its winning streak to seven straight games after gaining a 57-31 Colonial League victory over Northwestern.

Dainn Vassallo and Chase Marcks both scored six points in the opening quarter as the Crusaders raced to a 14-4 lead. Vassallo ended the contest with 12 points, while teammate Zach Rodgers led all scorers with 16 points.

For the Tigers, Eli Zimmerman posted a team-high 11 points.

Notre Dame improved to 14-3 overall and 12-1 in the league. Northwestern is now 8-8 and 6-6.

Northern Lehigh-Salisbury

Salisbury pulled away from Northern Lehigh to earn a 46-33 Colonial League victory.

Andrew Grejda scored a game-high 12 points for the Falcons, who used a 27-11 margin in the middle frames to take control. Jake Zellin contributed 10 points to the winning cause.

For the Bulldogs, who fell to 1-17 overall and 1-12 in the league, Ethan Kunkle collected a team-high 10 points. Nick Buskirk chipped in with eight.

The win lifted Salisbury to 5-12 and 5-8.

East Stroudsburg North used a fourth-quarter rally to gain a 68-63 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over Pleasant Valley.

Bryceson Dobie scored 10 of his game-high 29 points in the final frame as the Timberwolves erased a six-point deficit.

The winners, now 8-8, also received 18 points from Nate Wilder.

Jarod Moore posted a team-high 25 points for the Bears, who were hurt by a 12-of-25 effort at the free-throw line. PV’s Patrick Moore and Zach Prator both finished with 13.

The loss dropped Pleasant Valley to 7-9 overall and 5-8 in the league.

Williams Valley-Weatherly

Weatherly’s Ian McLaurin exploded for a career-high 29 points, but it wasn’t enough as Weatherly dropped a 64-57 Schuylkill League contest to Williams Valley.

McLaurin registered 13 of his points in the third quarter to keep Weatherly within four points of the Vikings, but the visitors made seven free throws during the final period to hold on for the win.

Alex Achenbach paced Williams Valley (6-11; 2-6) with 24 points, while Brady Shomper added 13.

The Wreckers, now 1-15 and 0-10, also received eight points from Jacob Parker, Corbin Wagner and Jordan Mitchell.

In the JV game, the Vikings posted a 64-39 win.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Jim Thorpe-Pottsville

Mackenzie Yuhas scored 16 points to help power Jim Thorpe to a 39-32 Schuylkill League victory over Pottsville.

The Olympians have won three of their last four games and improved to 9-7 overall and 5-5 in the league.

Brianna Snisky tallied six of her eight points in the opening quarter as Thorpe jumped out to a 13-6 advantage.

For the Crimson Tide, now 5-12 and 3-7, Alex Blum finished with a team-high 11 points.

Salisbury-Northern Lehigh

Northern Lehigh picked up its sixth consecutive victory with a 57-30 triumph over Salisbury in Colonial League action.

Aubrey Pollard scored 20 points for the Bulldogs, who also won for the ninth time in their last 10 games.

Katelynn Barthold added 16 points, while Dekota Barthold tallied 15, hitting three three-pointers.

Kendra Morgan’s eight points paced the Falcons, who were outscored 48-21 after the first quarter.

The win upped Nolehi’s record to 13-5 overall and 9-4 in the league.

Northwestern turned back Notre Dame Green Pond 32-29 in a matchup of two of the top teams in the Colonial League.

Paige Sevrain had 13 of her 15 points in the first half for the Tigers (16-1, 11-1).

Nina Miller hit two 3s and finished with six points to help Northwestern win its 15th straight game.

Emma Altmire, Olivia Schweitzer and Julia Pohl each had six points for the Crusaders (13-4), who trailed 21-12 at halftime.

Weatherly-Williams Valley

Williams Valley won its fourth game in a row, posting a 47-24 Schuylkill League victory over Weatherly.

Mallory Miller scored a game-high 19 points for the Vikings, including nine in the first quarter as the winners jumped out to a seven-point lead.

Williams Valley, which evened its mark at 8-8 overall while improving to 5-3 in the league, also received 12 points from Sage Smeltz.

Emma Kane paced the Wreckers (3-12; 0-9) with eight points while Kelly Reiner and Bethany Houser both finished with six.

SWIMMING

Tamaqua-Schuylkill Haven

Tamaqua swept Schuylkill Haven in a Schuylkill League meet.

The Blue Raiders rolled to a 116-29 victory in the boys meet, while the girls posted a 107-57 win.

Jathan Krall (200 freestyle, 500 freestyle) had a pair of wins for the Tamaqua (4-3) boys, and was also on the winning 200 freestyle medley and 400 freestyle relay teams.

Savannah Wilson won the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke for the Blue Raider (2-5) girls, and was on the winning 400 freestyle relay team.

B. Henninger had 20 points for the Eagles, who led 45-23 at halftime. L. Werner added 18.

Ben Baneravavge led the Panthers with 18 points. Danny Wehr and Derek Lazar each scored eight.

8TH GRADE

Weatherly-Blue Mountain

Weatherly rolled to a 51-32 victory over Blue Mountain.

The Wreckers’ Chance Stauffer led all scorers with 22 points, while teammate Kaiden Wesner chipped in with six.

7TH GRADE

Weatherly-Blue Mountain

Blue Mountain posted a 46-25 victory over Weatherly.

Cole Luckenbill scored 17 points to pace the Eagles.

For the Wreckers, Remi Hunsinger registered a team-high six points.
