Have you ever wondered if your priest can cook?
The Diocese of Allentown launched the third annual Cooks with Collars on Friday to show off a number of their priests’ skills, while helping to raise money for the parishes.
Cooks with Collars is open for voting until Feb. 20, and priests from all over the diocese are showing off their knowledge of the kitchen. Videos of the priests showcasing their cooking skills - or lack of skills - have been posted to the website www.cookswithcollars.com.
There are 41 parishes participating in the competition this year, including the local parishes of Assumption BVM of Slatington, St. Joseph Parish of the Panther Valley in Summit Hill, St. Nicholas in Walnutport, St. Teresa of Calcutta in Mahanoy City, Holy Cross in New Philadelphia, and SS. Peter and Paul of Lehighton.
For example, the Rev. Robert George is cooking up kielbasa salad and buffalo chicken meatball appetizers, as well as a Manhattan with a twist. The money raised from his entry will go to help the parish replace the church roof, gutters and chimney.
At SS. Peter and Paul parish, the Rev. Christopher Zelonis helped parishioner Sandy Whiteman make zucchini bread.
He joked in the video that Whiteman was the cook, while he was the collar.
Voting for parishes costs $10 a vote. Money raised will help the parishes, as well as Catholic Charities. There is no limit to how often you can cast a vote.
Winners in the competition will be announced on Feb. 21.
