State police at Schuylkill Haven are warning Schuylkill County and other area residents of an arrest scam.

Troopers said on Jan. 10 a 43-year-old woman from Washington Township, Schuylkill County, received a voicemail by a person claiming to be a sergeant with the county sheriff’s department.

The woman was urged to contact the person by the phone number provided in reference to a warrant that had been issued for her arrest. The information regarding the warrant was fraudulent and the warrant for the woman’s arrest did not exist.

Troopers said similar incidents of this type have been reported. The caller seeks to gain confidential information and/or bank account information to fraudulently transfer money from their bank accounts to the scammer.

Troopers said the scammers seem to be using the Internet to generate computer-based phone numbers with local area codes. Troopers said the scammers spoke English with no noticeable accents and played background sounds consistent with a law enforcement radios and/or recording noises.

Anyone with similar encounters are urged to report these incidents to local police agencies.
