Bowmanstown Borough Council on Tuesday tabled an ordinance related to the cable franchise agreement with Blue Ridge Communications.
Council needs to advertise and adopt the ordinance in order to adopt the Blue Ridge Communication TV franchise agreement.
Ultimately, council made a motion not to assess a cable franchise fee, with all in favor.
Councilwoman Kara Scott asked the residents who attended the meeting for their thoughts.
Councilman Darren Thomas said he believes it’s 100% discriminating.
Mayor Zach Snyder said it 100% is a back door tax.
Resident Ben Price noted that it’s not hidden, as it’s on the bill.
Price told Snyder he hears him talk on issues that he doesn’t have a vote on.
Resident Sharon Krebs then chimed in.
“Council runs the meetings, not the mayor,” Krebs said.
Resident Robert Sikorsky said he agrees with Thomas that it is discriminatory.
“Everybody in the borough should pay it or shouldn’t pay it,” Sikorsky said.
Council President Pam Leiby explained why council thought it best to discuss it with the community.
“We just were trying to see how the residents felt,” Leiby said.
Councilman Rob Moyer shared his thoughts.
“If it’s worthwhile, I don’t know,” Moyer said. “If we can keep the costs down, (it’s) worth it.”
Last month, council adopted the Blue Ridge Communications TV Franchise Agreement.
