Weissport starts year with reorganizational meeting

Weissport Borough Council reappointed several people to positions at its reorganizational meeting on Monday.

The following were approved for one year for 2023: Aimee Shank, secretary/treasurer; Brent Green, zoning officer; and Gregory Mousseau, solicitor.

James Osborne was reappointed to the Weissport Municipal Authority for four years.

Borough Council members will remain the same as they are elected officials. The next election for two of the council seats is in 2024.

Council also voted to pay the monthly bills with the exception of one for Barry Islett & Associates, the previous zoning officers. Council members had some questions about several items on the bill from Islett.

Green, the new zoning officer, told council members, “We have four properties to which we’ll be sending notice of violations.”

Weissport Event Committee plans to add a New Year’s Eve event next year for the borough.

Council President Arland Moyer rang the bell in the borough park on New Year’s Eve. Council members decided it would be nice to start up a New Year’s celebration, as the borough did in the past.

“It was a nice gesture,” Councilman Joe Foster said. “I thought we could make that an annual thing, to try to make that a little bigger each year.”

“We could have a little ‘burning of the calendars,’” Moyer said. “We could do things like that, more things like they used to do.”

The Weissport Event Committee holds celebrations for Easter, Halloween and Christmas, but is looking to do more for the community.

Taxes and garbage collections

Garbage fees collected for December were $591.38, and for the year were $38,534.10.

Taxes collected in December were $1,841.64 and for the year were $63,272.44.

Mousseau, the solicitor, told council that he has not received a contract from the borough’s garbage collector, GFL, which would include 2023.

“The only thing I have from them is an email with the offer, and my email back to them, ‘we’d like to do this, can you send us the contract?’” Mousseau said.

Moyer presented what the borough would pay GFL, and what residents would pay the borough, pending approval of the contract.

The monthly payment Weissport would pay for a one-year contract would be $6,552.

The annual rate for a one-year contract would be $78,624. A three-year contract would be $235,872. Council is planning on taking the three-year contract, to lock in the prices.

Weissport residents can pay $400 annually, or $34/month. The borough is offering a senior discount for those 65 or older; $384/annually or $32/month.
