Nesquehoning OKs 0.25-mill tax increase

Nesquehoning council made some slight adjustments and have included a 0.25-mill increase in the 2023 budget.

That means that residents will see a slight increase in next year’s property taxes.

On Wednesday, council adopted the new $1,850,149.60 spending plan, up approximately $30,000 from the preliminary plan in November.

Councilwoman Fran Heaney, chair of the budget committee, said that council added some money in with regards to possibly adding a fifth full-time police officer for the town. This addition would offset the overtime the officers are doing to provide coverage.

The new budget increases the millage to 19.55. Of that 17.35 mills goes to the general fund, 2.2 mills goes for fire protection and recreation.

One mill represents approximately $63,212.

The increase passed with one councilman casting a no vote.

Councilman Bruce Nalesnik opposed the budget increase, saying he didn’t feel a tax increase was truly necessary but he respects the wishes of the board.
