Light snowfall brings 1-3 inches to area roads, yards
An initial snapshot to remind us that winter is here only produced a light coating of snow in most areas on Sunday, but could serve as a preview of what’s to come later this week.
Tom Kines, senior meteorologist with AccuWeather, said about an inch-and-a-half of snow fell overnight just south of Lehighton, another 1.2 inches far southwest of Lehighton, 1.5 inches in Jim Thorpe, and 2 to 4 inches up into the Poconos.
Some events, such as the Polk Township tree lighting, were canceled Sunday and several school districts were on delay Monday morning.
“It wasn’t a significant event, but the fact it was the first snowfall of season, that’s always a big deal,” Kines said. “I’m sure there were some slick spots on the road.
“Every year we forget that the snow does cause slippery travel. It takes us a couple of storms for us to get back into the swing of things.”
While most of the region was spared with this one, there could be more precipitation on the horizon for Thursday, Kines said.
“It could be in the form of everything; snow, sleet, rain, freezing rain,” he said. “It looks like a big mess coming up.”
Kines said it could affect the Thursday into Thursday night time frame, and cautioned motorists to be cognizant.
“I suspect travel’s going to be slow,” he said. “It’s all dependent on the form of the precipitation that is the most dominant one.
“If it was all snow, it could certainly be a significant event; there would certainly be enough to shovel. The upside is that if it is mostly rain, it’s not as big of a deal as it could be.”
Regardless, Kines said he would expect some unpleasant weather Thursday into Thursday night.
As for today, he said temperatures were expected to top out in the upper 30s, low 40s, but by tonight, it could drop down to the high teens, upper 20s. If there are any wet spots tonight, they will freeze.
Kines said Tuesday and Wednesday look like we could reach the mid to upper 30s both days with a good amount of sunshine.
He said Thursday’s weather goes down hill, but added the system should start moving away Friday.
“It should be in its ending phase, assuming that the storm keeps moving,” Kines said. “The weather should improve some Friday afternoon, if not certainly by Friday night.”
Kines said that of right now, the weekend should be dry both days, with possibly some flurries sometime Saturday, and temperatures in the 30s both Saturday and Sunday.
