Tamaqua family pharmacy opens in former bank site
Shafer’s Pharmacy moved to a new site in Tamaqua this week, and already, people who’ve never been at the business are showing their support.
“We have seen a lot of new faces already, which is great because it’s always good to see new people stop in,” said pharmacy co-owner Ben Shafer.
The shop opened its doors Monday at the former Santander bank building, 408 E. Broad St. The site offers ample off street parking, unlike the 11 Center St. address that Shafer’s had occupied since 1946.
“I think people are glad that we are here, plus there is easier access for them to get in and out,” Ben Shafer said.
And while it’s not yet finished, Shafer’s plans to open a drive-through in the near future.
Visitors will find aisles of health goods, and a pharmacy counter that spans the length of the building. Offices are in the back, and the bank’s vault remains in the center.
“I’m really happy with how it turned out,” Ben Shafer said.
His grandfather, Edward Shafer, bought the pharmacy 76 years ago. When he retired, his son, Lee Shafer, took over and continues to work and co-own the business.
“You know, it’s nostalgic, but it was becoming more and more apparent that we needed to find something to kind of change with the times,” Ben Shafer said. “Things that worked in 1946 don’t necessarily work today.”
Reminders of Shafer’s long history have found their way into the new site.
Edward Shafer’s portrait and pharmacy degrees are on display, and an old illuminated clock from the brand “Tums” ticks on a front wall.
Antique advertisements, including one offering milk of magnesia and another offering film development for a quarter a roll, are framed and displayed.
“A lot of the stuff was my grandfather’s,” Ben Shafer noted.
The Tamaqua Area Chamber of Commerce organized a ribbon cutting Friday to mark the business’s move.
At this point, the Shafer family hasn’t decided what to do with the former site.
