Polk Twp. standoff ends peacefully

An incident in Monroe County Tuesday evening in which a resident was threatening to harm people and set his residence of fire ended peacefully with the suspect surrendering.

State police at Lehighton said troopers were dispatched to a home along Mill Pond Road in Polk Township for a report of a disturbance.

Through the investigation it was determined that a man in the home had made threats to harm people and set the home on fire.

Troopers from Lehighton and Stroudsburg set up a perimeter until the arrival of the state police special emergency response team. Through several hours of negotiation, SERT was successful in removing the man from the home without further incident.

The man, who troopers declined to identify, was charged with terroristic threats and placed in the county prison overnight before arraignment.

Troopers said there were no injuries to the suspect or any state police member.

Troopers said the incident was not an active shooter incident, as was reported on social media. Troopers said it is important to note that when a major incident happens all accurate information will come from the state police.

Troopers thanked community members in the surrounding area for their support and understanding.
