Carbon County Court - Guilty pleas
A Carbon County woman, already serving a state prison term, entered guilty pleas to two pending criminal cases on Tuesday in the county court.
She was one of nine defendants in pending cases to enter a guilty plea before Judge Steven R. Serfass.
Vehicle stop
Beth Ann Hosier, 38, of Nesquehoning, pleaded to one count of possession/sale/ use display of documents and criminal use of a communication facility.
She was arrested on Sept. 14, 2021, by Mahoning Township police during a traffic stop. She was operating a vehicle with a fraudulent inspection sticker.
The second charge stems from an incident on June 9, 2021, by Lehighton police as part of an ongoing investigation for drug dealing.
Hosier sold methamphetamine to a confidential informant.
She is currently an inmate in the state prison at Cambridge Springs, Crawford County, serving a DUI sentence.
Serfass went along with a plea deal.
On the drug count, she was sentenced to serve 12 to 48 months in a state prison and on the fraud count six to 24 months in a state prison. The terms run concurrent to each other and concurrent with the DUI term.
The agreement will allow her to apply for placement in the state drug treatment program in the state system.
Other pleas
Jacob Robert Kroon, 26, of Northampton, pleaded to one count of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance.
He was arrested on Aug. 8 by Lehighton police. In a plea deal, felony counts of receiving stolen property and firearms not to be carried without a license were dropped.
He was arrested following a traffic stop. The vehicle he was operating had been reported stolen in Slatington earlier. Found in the vehicle with Kroon was $1,253 in cash and baggies containing methamphetamine. Kroon admitted to selling drugs.
Serfass sentenced him to serve one day less 12 to one day less 24 months in the county prison, where Kroon is currently an inmate on the charges. The prison term will be followed by one year of probation. He was given credit for 107 days already served.
He was also ordered to get a drug and alcohol evaluation, zero tolerance for drug or alcohol use, render 150 hours of community service and make restitution of $364 for a towing bill.
Jesse Dale Krum, 30, of Nesquehoning, pleaded to one count of DUI. He was arrested on Feb. 18 by Lehighton police along Bridge Street. A test revealed a 0.14 BAC.
He previously pleaded to another DUI charge and was sentenced on both.
On the first DUI he was sentenced to serve 90 days to 60 months in prison, ordered to pay a fine of $1,500, license suspended for 18 months and supply a DNA sample.
On the second DUI he was sentenced to serve 90 days to 84 months, pay a fine of $2,500, and another 18 months suspension. The jail terms run concurrently. He was given credit for 87 days spent in a inpatient rehabilitation program.
He will begin serving the remaining three days on Dec. 2 at 6 p.m.
Cody Langille, 21, of Stroudsburg, pleaded to one count of receiving stolen property. He was arrested on Jan. 12, 2021, by state police at Lehighton for his part in the theft of a watch.
He was placed on probation for 24 months and ordered to render 100 hours of community service and supply a DNA sample.
Valerie Ann Herbst, 56, of Lehighton, pleaded to one count of DUI. She was arrested on Dec. 7, 2021, by Lehighton police along South Street.
Sentencing was deferred so she can apply for the house arrest program.
Matthew Ryan Lepley, 34, of Pottstown, pleaded to a summary offense of general lighting requirement - no rear lights on his vehicle. He was arrested on Sept. 6, 2019, by Lehighton police. In a plea deal four counts of DUI were dropped.
Serfass imposed a fine of $25 and costs.
Michael Robert Mika, 42, of Lansford, pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. He was arrested on Feb. 7 by Jim Thorpe police following a vehicle stop. In exchange for the plea, a case involving DUI and drug counts were dropped.
Serfass imposed a fine of $1,000.
Brianna Jane Wasyliw, 21, of Effort, appeared for two pending DUI cases. In the first, for an incident on Aug. 9, 2020, filed by state police at Lehighton, she was placed in the county’s Accelerated Rehabilitation Disposition probation program for a year, assessed $600 for the cost of the program, ordered to render 50 hours of community service and her license suspended for 90 days.
In the second case, a DUI charge was dropped in a plea deal and she pleaded to motor vehicle code summary offense. She was fined $50.
Joseph Matthew Staskiel, 29, of Kulpmont, Northumberland County, pleaded to one count of DUI. He was arrested on Sept. 5, 2021, by Lehighton police during a checkpoint operation. A third offense, the charge is rated a felony 3.
Staskiel is currently an inmate in the state prison at Camp Hill, Cumberland County, serving a 21 to 60 month term imposed in Union County.
Serfass sentenced him to serve 12 to 60 months in a state prison and ordered he pay a fine of $2,500, license suspended for 18 months and supply a DNA sample.
The term runs concurrent with the Union County sentence.
Each defendant sentenced must also pay court costs of over $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole or probation.
