Carbon County commissioners honor Eagle Scout

Carbon County officials paid tribute on Thursday to the newest Eagle Scout in the county.

The county commissioners recognized Avery James Hosler, a member of Boy Scout Troop 209, Palmerton, for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. Hosler’s Court of Honor was held Sunday at Palmerton Rod and Gun Club.

To reach this milestone, Hosler installed four benches and four dog waste receptacle posts along a 3-mile portion of the D&L Trail in East Penn Township.

In total, it took Hosler three months to organize and complete the project, totaling 270 hours with the help of six adults and six other Scouts.

Hosler, who has been in scouting for six years, said that it was the influence of friends and family that led him to this goal.

He said that the project was initially supposed to be larger, but a theft of four benches caused him to reassess and change up his project slightly. The benches have never been recovered.

Commissioner Rocky Ahner commended Hosler for his efforts and the elite group he joined.

“It’s good to see that young people in general are stepping up to be leaders,” Ahner said.

Commissioners’ Chairman Wayne Nothstein, who is also an Eagle Scout, congratulated the young man on his accomplishment.

He urged him to make sure to note his Eagle status on applications because it will take him far.

“It’s something to be proud of,” Nothstein said. “It shows to me that you are trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent.”

Commissioner Chris Lukasevich told Hosler that this will be a “burden of responsibility” that will follow him through life and to wear this honor proudly.

During Hosler’s time in Scouting, he has earned 60 badges and served as den chief, patrol leader, assistant senior patrol leader, senior patrol leader and quartermaster.
