Lehighton allows beverage outlet work to continue
A wine store and beverage outlet proposed for heavily traveled Blakeslee Boulevard may resume work on site.
Borough council on a 6-0 vote Monday authorized borough engineer Bruce Steigerwalt to approve the land development agreement when he is satisfied all the conditions have been met.
The matter was brought forth after Steigerwalt said he was still waiting for revised plans for the Lehighton Wine and Beverage project.
Todd and Jane Mason were in attendance. Jane is managing partner of Mitch 328 LLC. The couple owns Mason’s Cold Beer in Jim Thorpe.
“We thought we would have all the plans approved by tonight,” Todd Mason said. “We’re very close with many of the issues.”
He said they were issued a building permit for a wall, and that he’d like to get back on the property.
“I expect to have everything in place by this week,” he said. “I’d like to ask if there could be some consideration for us to complete the wall.”
Steigerwalt said that while it wasn’t his decision, past practice has been that council always required everyone to have final land approval.
Councilwoman Autumn Abelovsky said the Masons want to follow the rules and get approval, and that she’d like to see the project advance rather than make the Masons wait.
“I really expect the rest of the paperwork by the end of this week,” Todd Mason said.
Steigerwalt added, “I can’t review what I don’t have.”
Last month, council granted a request from Mitch 328 LLC for a waiver pertaining to sidewalks, and granted conditional approval for the land development plan.
In June, the Lehighton Planning Commission unanimously accepted plans for review brought forth by Mitch 328 LLC.
Darrin Heckman, senior project manager for Keystone Engineering, said the plan calls for a new two-unit building at 101 Blakeslee Blvd. Drive East.
The business would be built on roughly one acre west of Advance Auto. The location has been used by a farm stand.
It will be a 52-by-152-foot building, half of which would be a beverage center (beer store), and the other half wine and spirits.
