Sexual assault case continues in Carbon court

The sexual assault case of a Wayne County man continued on Wednesday in Carbon County court with the first officer involved in the case testifying that the two victims identified the defendant in a photo lineup.

George Karagiannis, 30, of Honesdale, has been charged with 13 felony counts involving two young girls authorities said he sexually assaulted in Summit Hill in May 2020, after making contact with one of them on a social media site.

Karagiannis has been charged with rape of a child, statutory sexual assault, two counts each of aggravated indecent assault and corruption of minors, four counts of unlawful contact with a minor, and one count each of sexual abuse of children, photograph, film, depicting on computer sex act with a child and criminal use of a communication facility.

The initial complaint against Karagiannis was filed by Summit Hill police officer Michael Leighton. He later requested the assistance of the attorney general’s office because the internet was involved and his department did not have the manpower to pursue such a case.

Leighton, who is no longer on the borough force but works as a police officer elsewhere, testified Wednesday that the mother of the two girls, who are sisters, first reported the incident in July 2020. He said from interviews with the two girls he learned the sexual assault occurred in May 2020.

He said the younger of the two girls first made contact with a man on the social media site called Omegle. He said after contact was made they moved to the Snapchat site. The man requested the girls send him nude photos of themselves, which they eventually did. He then sent an indecent photo to the girls.

After the AG office got involved they were able to track down the man through the Omegle and Snapchat sites. The investigation then developed a possible suspect, Karagiannis.

On Sept. 9, 2020, Leighton presented one of the girls with a photo lineup with eight individuals with similar facial features. The girls said the man in question had a beard. After viewing the photo lineup for about 15 minutes the girl positively identified Karagiannis as the man who assaulted her. She also identified a picture of a pickup truck in Karagiannis’ driveway as the one he picked her and her sister up.

Leighton said about an hour later he had the second girl look at the photo lineup by herself and she also identified Karagiannis as the person who sexually assaulted her.

The trial was scheduled to resume at 9 a.m. today. President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II is presiding. It is anticipated that the trial will conclude today.
