Nesquehoning is trying something new with parking during a snowstorm this winter.
Council announced last week the borough is not going to post the streets for the winter months, meaning motorists will not be required to move their vehicles to one side of the street or the other for plowing.
“Our responsibilities is street openings and driving lanes,” councilman Louis Paul said.
He said it is up to the plow driver on whether they widen the path on a street during a storm.
That means that no curb-to-curb plowing will take place this winter.
Paul said the reason the borough is trying this is because of complaints, including snow being pushed back onto sidewalks when plowing, people not moving their cars, and equipment damage.
If a large snowstorm does happen, the borough would post streets if snow removal which would require dump trucks hauling away snow, was needed.
Council said it is also working to get the borough crew, as well as water authority and sewer department, to work together to keep the borough streets plowed.
Paul outlined the guidelines workers will need to follow this winter during a snowstorm, including how long their shifts can be, what areas each driver would be responsible for and how call outs for working would be handled.
Last year, the borough tried a new way of posting streets for snowstorms and received criticism for how it was handled.
