Election Preview: Voters to choose in Wild-Scheller race

The redistricting of congressional positions in Pennsylvania resulted in Carbon County’s representation being changed starting in 2023.

No longer will Rep. Dan Meusser, a Republican, represent the county. Meanwhile, a hot battle between incumbent Rep. Susan Wild, a Democrat, and challenger Lisa Scheller, the GOP nominee, will decide the officeholder in the 7th District that now includes Carbon County.

The district also includes all of Lehigh and Northampton counties and parts of Monroe County, including the townships of Eldred, Polk and Ross.

For Wild and Scheller, the Nov. 8 balloting is a rematch of their 2020 race in which Wild won 195,475 to 181,407.

She has held that seat since Jan. 3, 2019, having won the regular election and special election on Nov. 6, 2018. She filled the remainder of Rep. Charlie Dent’s term, then as the 15th Congressional District officeholder.

Before joining Congress, Wild was the solicitor of the City of Allentown from 2015-17. She was also a partner with the firm Gross McGinley, specializing in litigation, medical malpractice and municipal law.

Wild is the first woman to represent the Lehigh Valley in Congress.

To get a rematch with Wild, Scheller had to survive a Primary Election battle with Kevin Dellicker. She prevailed by a margin of 34,384 to 32,627.

She served as a member of the Lehigh County Board of Commissioners from 2012-16.

Scheller earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado and a master’s degree from Lehigh University.

She founded Hope & Coffee, a coffee shop and recovery meeting space in Tamaqua.

At the time of her 2020 campaign, she was president of Silberline Manufacturing Co. and served on the executive committee of the Aluminum Association of America.

A U.S. Representative’s base salary is $174,000.
