PV routs Nativity
Senior Night.
The last time the uniform is worn.
The last time the band plays.
The last time forever.
Panther Valley’s Mike Pascoe made his Senior Night one to remember on Thursday against Pottsville Nativity.
Pascoe did that by turning in a record-breaking performance in leading the Panthers to a 27-0 contingency game victory.
Pascoe was expectational. He pounded, he grounded and he supercharged his team with 258 yards rushing and three touchdowns - scoring on runs of 52, 10 and 17 yards. For good measure, he added a 15-yard scoring strike to classmate Austin Hadley.
In the process, Pascoe broke both the Panther Valley single-season and career rushing records.
“I’m happy for Michael, for all these seniors,” said Panther Valley first-year coach Mark Lavine. “I’m happy the seniors ended it on a high note.
“The line created holes, (fullback) Austin Hadley blocked for him, our receivers blocked for him. It was a big night for Michael, but he also got a lot of help.”
Pascoe was dynamite from the get-go. He roared up and down the field, carrying 10 times in the Panthers’ first drive - which ended on a 15-yard scoring strike to Hadley out of the backfield.
On PV’s next series, Pascoe carried the ball all six times in the series, including a 52-yard run to the end zone. He kept swatting Nativity defenders away, like pesky flies with a flyswatter, before finally breaking free for keeps around the 25 yard line on his way to the end zone.
“I never get tired,” Pascoe said afterward about running the ball 36 times. “I don’t tire out I’m ready to go. But I definitely couldn’t do it without my line – all glory to them.”
Pascoe would power into the end zone for the third Panther Valley touchdown on a bulldozing-like run from 10 yards out. This one capped a 12-play, 42-yard drive and made it 21-0 at halftime.
Pascoe gave special credit for his record-breaking night to Hadley.
“He’s a stud,” Pascoe said of the 6-3, 235-pound fellow senior.
Hadley felt the same way about Pascoe.
“I wouldn’t want to block for anyone else – he’s my guy,” Hadley said.
The Panthers’ final trip to the end zone trip came in the fourth quarter when Pascoe darted, powered and bullied his way for 17 yards to cap his record-setting night.
While Pascoe’s offensive performance stole the headlines, the Panther Valley defense was also sensational, limiting the Green Wave to 46 yards rushing.
“It was so much fun,” said Pascoe. “Everyone played well. It was great to end my career on a winning note.”
THE RECORD HOLDER .... According to the school’s statistics, Pascoe finished the season with 1,351 yards - breaking Dave Slonaker’s mark of 1,342 yards set in 1979. He finished his PV career with 2,437 yards, topping Justin Malaska’s mark of 2,421 that he compiled between 1990-92.
FINAL TIME ... Seven seniors played their final game for PV. In addition to Pascoe and Hadley, they included Ethan Gardner, Alfred Collevechio, Riley Hoben, Logan Haines and David McAndrew.
