PA 40th Senate District
Voters in Monroe County will elect a new senator who will represent the 40th District starting in 2023.
That’s because Sen. Mario Scavello, the incumbent Republican, is retiring.
The candidates are Republican Rosemary Brown, a current state representative, and Democrat Jennifer Shukaitis, a Stroud Township supervisor. They were both unopposed in the Primary Election.
In addition to all of Monroe County, the district includes parts of Lackawanna County, consisting of the City of Carbondale, the townships of Carbondale, Clifton, Covington, Elmhurst, Fell, Jefferson, Madison, Roaring Brook, Spring Brook and Thornhurst, and the boroughs of Archbald, Blakely, Jermyn, Jessup, Mayfield, Moscow, Olyphant and Vandling; and parts of Wayne County consisting of the townships of Canaan, Cherry Ridge, Dreher, Lake, Lehigh, Salem, South Canaan, Sterling and Texas, and the boroughs of Honesdale, Prompton and Waymart.
Brown first won election to the state House in 2010.
She earned bachelor’s in communications from the University of Scranton in 1992. Her professional experience includes working in executive sales management with Macy’s, where she continued to work before taking executive sales positions with Saks Fifth Avenue and Bon-Ton. She later entered the field of pharmaceutical sales where she worked for Hoffman-LaRoche and Vistakon.
Shukaitis earned a bachelor’s degree from East Stroudsburg University in 1998 and a graduate degree from Colorado State University in 2000. Her career experience includes working in retail, operations management, health care, and as a medical coding specialist.
She has served with Brodhead Watershed Association as secretary and Act 137 Affordable Housing as a board member. She has been affiliated with Stroud Regional Open Space and Recreation Commission.
