Carbon County gets ready for multiple Veterans Day events
Deadlines to register for some Carbon County events leading up to Veterans Day on Nov. 11 is nearing.
The Veterans Affairs office has announced that anyone who is interested in the Veterans Vote supper and campfire on Nov. 8 and a ruck march on Nov. 9 should get their RSVPs in so the office can plan accordingly.
Christine LeClair, director of the Veterans Affairs office, said that veterans can bring their spouse to the events, do not need a rucksack and can march at their own pace.
Several events are planned for the week of Nov. 6 that will honor the men and women who have served.
Kicking off the week is the annual Carbon County Veterans Day Parade, held this year in Palmerton. It will begin at 2 p.m.
At 10 a.m. on Nov. 7, the county will kick off #OperationGreenLight with a Veterans Day service in Josiah White Park.
Palmerton police Chief and U.S. Army Veteran Timothy Kromer will be the keynote speaker for the event. All are invited.
From 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 8, veterans are welcome to a dinner and beach campfire at Mauch Chunk Lake Park. Bring your camp chair.
An RSVP to this event is required by Nov. 1.
A ruck march Walk with a Veteran is planned for 7 a.m. on Nov. 9 at Mauch Chunk Lake Park.
Veterans will participate in a 2.5-mile downhill march from the lake to Flagstaff Road. Transportation back to the lake will then be available.
Refreshments will be provided.
Together With Veterans NEPA, partnering with St. Luke’s University Health Network, will celebrate the grand opening of Carbon County’s Veterans Hub of Northeastern PA at St. Luke’s Lehighton campus at 1 p.m. on Nov. 10.
All are welcome to see the new hub, located in the main lobby entrance at 211 N. 12th St.
Later that evening, Together With Veterans will welcome veterans and a guest to Penn’s Peak for a Veterans Day dinner. The event will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. and is sold out except for a few vendor spaces, LeClair said.
For more information or to RSVP to any or all of these events, veterans can call the office at 570-325-3986 or email CLeClair@carboncounty.net.
Carbon Career & Technical Institute in Jim Thorpe also will hold a Veterans Day Assembly at 9 a.m. on Nov. 11 in the school cafeteria. Veterans are invited to attend by RSVPing to the school at 570-325-3682, ext. 1500. Deadline to RSVP is Nov. 7.
The Valor Clinic will also hold its Patriot Ball on Nov. 11 at Stroudsmoor Country Inn in Stroudsburg. For more information on that, visit https://valorclinic.org/product/2022-patriots-ball-individual-ticket.
In addition to these events, Carbon County, which became the first Operation Green Light for Veterans County in the country in July, will ask residents and businesses to change one light bulb in their home to a green light bulb in the hopes of starting a conversation and raising awareness and showing support for veterans.
The national initiative expands on Operation Green Light by New York State Association of Counties and NYS County Veteran Service Officers Association in the hopes of raising awareness about challenges veterans face and resources that are available to them through county Veterans Affairs offices.
Commissioner Chris Lukasevich said on Thursday that five libraries in Carbon County have signed up to support the initiative.
He also noted that Carbon County is planning to join the Hidden Heroes campaign by the Elizabeth Dole Foundation.
Hidden Heroes is a program that aims to provide support to veterans and their families.
