Roundabouts projected for late 2024 finish

The wheels on the PennDOT trucks will keep going round and round for about two more years in the West End of Monroe County.

That’s when the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation says the roundabout project in Brodheadsville will be completed.

The project, estimated at a cost of almost $19 million is scheduled for completion in November 2024, according to Ronald J. Young Jr., PennDOT’s District 5 press officer.

The construction work, at the intersection of routes 209 and 115, has disrupted traffic and made it hard to get in and out of some businesses along the busy corridor by Pleasant Valley High School.

“The roadway improvements are partly necessary to handle increased traffic created by growth in this area. And local businesses will benefit from the improvements,” Young said.

The project to build two roundabouts in Brodheadsville was announced in April 2021.

The project’s estimated cost in 2020 was $12 million but after bids were received, Latona Trucking, Inc., of Pittston was awarded the contract for $18,823,324 in March 2021.

Young said supply chain problems that have hit many projects in the United States have not affected the Brodheadsville roundabouts.

He also said that he doesn’t have any data if businesses along the corridor have been negatively impacted.

“Latona Trucking plans to operate through winter as weather conditions permit,” Young said. “These winter operations will mostly consist of parallel pipe installations on Route 115, excavating, and erosion and sedimentation controls. Also this winter work will occur mostly ‘off road’ and will have minimal impacts to traffic.”
