Carbon County court - sentencing

A Slatington woman was sentenced to a prison term on Friday in Carbon County court on a charge of retail theft.

She was one of four defendants who previously entered guilty pleas to criminal charges to be sentenced by President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II.

Mahoning incident

Courtney Hoffert, 32, was sentenced to serve one to 18 months in the county prison.

She was arrested on Aug. 14, 2020, by Mahoning Township police for taking various electronic devices from the Walmart store. Total value of the items was $913. There is a co-defendant in the case.

Nanovic noted Hoffert has a criminal record dating back to 2012 and is tied to a drug addiction problem. She admitted using drugs earlier this year and has a pending driving under the influence charge.

Nanovic also ordered her to make restitution to Walmart for $913, get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, zero tolerance imposed for drug or alcohol use, and supply a DNA sample.

She will begin serving the prison term on Oct. 21 at 8 p.m.

Other cases

Daniel Rolon, 31, of Coaldale, was sentenced to serve one to 12 months in prison on a charge of unsworn falsification to authorities and driving while license is suspended or revoked.

He was arrested on the first count on Jan. 29, 2020, by Lansford police following a vehicle stop. He had a fraudulent inspection sticker on the vehicle he was driving.

Nanovic also ordered him to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and supply a DNA sample.

He was given credit for three days already served and will begin the prison term at 5 p.m. on Oct. 28 and serve the remaining 27 days on consecutive, two-day weekends.

Richard Smith, 38, of Lansford, was sentenced to serve one to six months in jail on a driving under the influence charge, pay a fine of $2,000 and license suspended for a year.

He was arrested on Aug. 25, 2018, by Lansford police.

He was given credit for 22 days already served and will begin serving the remaining time at 9 a.m. on Oct. 21.

Henry J. Rodriguez Jr., 52, of Reading, was placed on probation for six months and ordered to pay a fine of $300 on a DUI charge.

He was arrested on Sept. 7, 2020, by Lansford police for DUI of alcohol. It was is first offense.

Each defendant must also pay court costs of more than $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole.
