Saturday night fundraiser helps Jim Thorpe youth football

The Jim Thorpe Booster Club had its first Saturday night football games last week.

The day kicked off with a scrimmage by the kindergarten through second grade team (C team).

The B team, third and fourth graders, won 28-0, bringing their season record to 6-1.

Fifth and sixth graders on the A team won 40-0, upping their record to 6-0.

A large crowd attended and there was a 50/50 drawing, basket raffle and concession stand to rasie funds.

Jen Albright, secretary of the booster club, said, “everybody had a good time and we raised money to give back to the team.”

The event is the largest fundraiser for football. The 110 prizes for the basket raffle were donated by community businesses.

“It’s fun to teach the kids the right way to do things,” said assistant Jesse Walk, coaches the third and fourth graders.

There were cheerleaders for each team.

Emily Summers, who coaches fourth through sixth graders, was a cheerleader in high school.

She is a sophomore at Lehigh Carbon Community College, majoring in secondary education, and likes coaching because it gives her a “good opportunity to be around children.”

Jamie Jones enjoyed watching the game with Elizabeth Ruffa. Their 6 year olds are on the same team. Jones said her son Kaiden, “tried football last year and wasn’t into it. He was willing to try again this year and now he loves it.”
