Walnutport Canal Festival set for Sunday

Clydesdale driven carriage rides, Victorian high wheelers, even an old-fashioned calliope.

That autumn-like feel will permeate the air at the 43rd annual Walnutport Canal Festival.

Sponsored by the Walnutport Canal Association, the event takes place from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Rain or shine.

“Pray for good weather,” said Jeanne Boehrer, festival event member. “We have to be due (because of COVID and downpours in recent years).”

Boehrer said Steiner’s Artisan Farms will have Clydesdale driven carriage rides. The cost is $10 for adults, and $5 for children age 10-and-under.

She said the Lehigh County Seeing Eye Puppy Club, Dennis Robinson’s Calliope, the Victorian Highwheelers Bicycle Club, and the Rotary Club of Slatington will also be on hand.

So too, will Al Grout with his juggling/comedy/magic in the Kids Creativity Corral at 1, 2 and 3 p.m.

Boehrer said entertainment will include Bill Reese’s at the Hop/Classic Country Show from noon to 2:30 p.m., followed by Jay Smar from 3-5 p.m.

Thee will be a bounce house in the Kids Creativity Carrol, along with a candy wheel and pumpkin decorating.

There will also be hayrides, crafters, demonstrators, and food, with three additional food groups this year.

Boehrer said the event will also feature a basket auction sponsored by Thrivant Financial in the pavilion, and the Locktender’s House and Heritage Center will be open for tours.

The hayrides for adults and kids cost $5 each. The hayrides are sponsored by McDonald’s of Walnutport.

“I think it’s our community; they look forward to it every year,” she said. “It’s a nice event; you see your neighbors.”

Boehrer thanked the residents on South Canal Street and on Lehigh Street for their support.

“We inconvenience them for one day, and it’s highly appreciated that they work with us, and that they understand this is for them too,” she said. “Kids look forward to it, it’s a fun day. We have something for everyone.”
