Local roundup: Results from Oct. 11

Pleasant Valley’s volleyball team secured its place atop the Mountain Division in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference on Tuesday.

Elsewhere, the Northwestern boys cross country squad completed an undefeated season for the second year in a row with another Colonial League sweep.

VOLLEYBALL

PM West-Pleasant Valley

After honoring seniors Sarah Ballek, Emma Bergstresser, Kristin Ferris, Jackie James, Nora Jones and Maria Saitta, Pleasant Valley was able to clinch the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Mountain Division with a 25-15, 25-15, 25-14 victory over Pocono Mountain West.

The Bears remained undefeated in division play at 9-0 (11-6 overall) and will face Stroudsburg on Thursday in their final regular season match.

Jones and Ballek made the most of their night, as both PV seniors had stellar performances. Jones racked up nine kills, seven digs and two assists, while Ballek aided in on the attack at the net with six kills and two blocks.

Hannah Akob (five kills, five digs, two blocks, one ace, one assist), Brianna Bruckman (15 assists, seven digs) and Jackie James (six assists, five digs, three kills) were also vital in helping the Bears clinch the division.

Jim Thorpe-Blue Mountain

Jim Thorpe posted a 25-20, 25-11, 25-15 Schuylkill League victory over Blue Mountain.

Brianna Snisky led the Olympians with seven service points, seven kills and five blocks, while Brooke Mitzen chipped in with nine kills and 10 digs.

Leah Figura (22 service points, 10 digs, three kills), Maggy Hallihan (23 assists, 10 digs, two kills) and Kelsey Patton (three kills, three aces) all helped Jim Thorpe move to 15-2 overall and 11-2 in the league.

Blue Mountain slides to 8-9 (7-6).

Lehighton-Tamaqua

Lehighton swept Tamaqua 25-20, 25-8, 25-5 in a Schuylkill League match.

Lorah Thomas posted 11 kills, four blocks and two aces for the Indians, while Amanda Burns fired nine kills and five aces.

Makenna Snyder (seven kills, four aces), Madison Serfass (four kills, two aces) and Autumn Clewell (34 assists, four aces, two kills) helped the Tribe improve to 6-13 overall, and 5-8 in the league.

Tamaqua slips to 1-20 overall, and 0-13 in the league.

Panther Valley-Weatherly

Morgan Orsulak had four aces and 12 assists to pace Panther Valley to a 25-11, 25-12, 25-14 Schuylkill League win over Weatherly.

Riley McArdle had three digs, eight kills and two aces for the Panthers (14-2 overall; 11-1 SL). Natalie Vermillion posted five aces, 12 kills and two digs, while Abby Benick put up six assists.

Becca Schell had three digs and one kill for the Wreckers (4-15; 1-11). Jenna Winkler also added two digs and one block, and Christal Kislan recorded two kills in the contest.

Marian-Mahanoy Area

Julia Meiss put up 30 assists and 15 digs to lead Marian to a 25-19, 22-25, 25-15, 25-21 Schuylkill League win over Mahanoy Area.

Megan Paisley added 26 digs and 10 kills for the Fillies (12-5). Abbey Kluck had 12 kills and 12 digs, while Jenna Goff also recorded 10 digs and six kills.

Marian has one regular season match remaining, Thursday at home against Weatherly.

Northwestern-Palmerton- Bangor-Pen Argyl-Wilson-

Northern Lehigh

Matthew Santana took the overall victory for the unbeaten Northwestern boys with a time of 16:33. Samuel Bower (16:51) finished 18 seconds behind winner Santana to place second for the Tigers (24-0), who also had Sean Kershner place in the top 10 with a ninth-place finish and five runners finish in the top 15, with Zachary Santana finishing 11th and Xander Giandomenico placing 12th, respectively.

Palmerton’s Owen Hibell (17:07) completed the podium in the boys race. Connor Hibell recorded a fourth-place finish for the Bombers.

In the girls’ race, Northwestern’s Angelina Klein (20:32) finished 45 seconds behind eventual winner Avery Errico of Wilson in second.

Emma Heil led Northern Lehigh at the home meet with a fourth-place finish (21:29). Sophia Cornell finished out the top-five for Northwestern. Natalie Mosier was the top Palmerton runner in sixth (22:33).

North Schuylkill-Tamaqua

Abby Leinbach led Tamaqua with two goals in a 5-0 victory over North Schuylkill in Schuylkill League play.

Kimmy Rudy, Sarah Hope and Kolbe Robb also scored goals for the Raiders (7-9), while Cecila Ulicny recorded the shutout.

Tamaqua has one more game left in the regular season, Thursday at Pottsville.

Pen Argyl-Palmerton

Palmerton closed out Colonial League play with a 4-0 shutout victory over visiting Pen Argyl, which in turn helped the Bombers seal the No. 1 seed in the league playoffs.

Nataly Walters was the Bomber behind all four goals scored. Riley Gerhard provided two assists, while Emma Martinez and Cora Wentz also had assists. Emma Snyder finished with a save to earn the shutout.

Palmerton moves to 15-2 overall (11-1 CL), while Pen Argyl falls to 6-10 (3-9).

Pleasant Vy.-Beth. Catholic

Summer Hill scored five goals in the second half to lift Bethlehem Catholic to a 5-3 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference win over Pleasant Valley.

Hill scored three times off free kicks and twice off corners for the (11-5) Golden Hawks, who trailed 1-0 at the intermission.

Ella Muir scored two goals for Pleasant Valley (8-8-1). Aryn Stivala also had a goal for the Lady Bears. Stivala and Peyton Foder assisted goals in the loss.

Minersville-Weatherly

Minersville rolled to an 8-0 Schuylkill League win over Weatherly.

Goalkeeper Emma Kane recorded 11 saves for the Wreckers.

Weatherly falls to 4-13, with one game remaining Thursday at Schuylkill Haven.

BOYS SOCCER

Williams Vy.-No. Lehigh

The LoPinto brothers helped Northern Lehigh end the regular season with a 5-2 non-league win over visiting Williams Valley.

Bryce LoPinto, a senior, and Chayce LoPinto, a freshman, both finished with two goals. Ethan Miller also scored.

Ethan Kunkle grabbed 15 saves, as the Bulldogs finish with a 2-12-3 overall record.

FIELD HOCKEY

Catasauqua-Lehighton

Lehighton knocked off Catasauqua for a 5-1 victory.

Maggie Pagotto paced the Indians with two scores. Gabby Brown, Brielle Frable and Addie Chavonic also scored in the win, while Greyson Frey finished with four saves.

Lehighton moved to 8-8 overall, while Catasauqua slips to 3-14 on the season.

Palmerton-Palisades

Palmerton closed out its regular season with a 4-2 Colonial League win over Palisades.

Sydney Frantz scored four goals for the Bombers, with Mikayla Pengally and Kelsey Ballier assisting on two of them. Emily Bollinger finished with 10 saves.

Camila O’Donnell and Dahlia Greenburg scored for the Pirates.

Palmerton ends with a 10-6 overall record, and a 9-5 mark in the league.

Northwestern-Brandywine

Cara Thomas scored three first-quarter goals as Northwestern rolled to an 8-1 non-league victory over Brandywine.

Brinley Rex also had a big day for the Tigers (13-4-1) with a goal and three assists. Other Northwestern goals were scored by Carsyn Van Norman, Ella Dangello, Amelia Birch and Taylor Langley. Brooke Page added an assist.

Stroudsburg-Pleasant Vy.

Stroudsburg blanked Pleasant Valley for a 3-0 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference win.

Jenna Duke paced the Mounties with a goal and an assist.

Pleasant Valley falls to 5-11-1 overall (5-11-1 EPC), while Stroudsburg moves to 12-6 (12-6).
