Local Roundup: Results from Sept. 24
Four area girls soccer teams posted wins on Saturday.
Jim Thorpe, Weatherly, Tamaqua and Northern Lehigh all gained victories over the weekend.
GIRLS SOCCER
Jim Thorpe-Palmerton
Alexis Marotto scored 26 seconds into the second OT period to lift Jim Thorpe to a 2-1 non-conference win over Palmerton.
The Olympians’ Mackenzie Yuhas assisted on the game-winner.
Thorpe’s Kaila O’Connor opened the scoring midway through the second half. Four minutes later, the Bombers’ Nataly Walters tied things up off a feed from Ella Baumgardt.
The Olympians’ Olivia Rosenberger made 19 saves, while Palmerton goalie Emma Snyder stopped nine shots.
Jim Thorpe improved to 9-1, while the Bombers slipped to 9-2.
Marian-Weatherly
Five first-half goals lifted Weatherly to a 6-0 Schuylkill League victory over Marian.
Juliette Bartel led the Wreckers with two goals and an assist, while Kendall Gerhart added a goal and two assists.
Weatherly’s Erin Prete contributed two goals, with Bethany Houser chipping in with one.
Emma Kane finished with eight saves to earn the shutout win, while the Fillies’ keeper Maddie Kattner stopped 22 shots.
Weatherly upped its record to 2-7 overall and 1-6 in the league, while Marian dropped to 0-10 and 0-8.
No. Lehigh-Catasauqua
Kateylnn Barthold scored four goals to propel Northern Lehigh to a 9-1 Colonial League victory over Catasauqua.
Mikayla Gordon also finished with a hat trick for the Bulldogs, who received a goal from Nicole Zarayko and an assist from Kaylee Wilk.
Nolehi, winners of six straight, moved to 10-3, while the Roughies fell to 1-11.
Tamaqua-Nativity
Sarah Hope had a goal and an assist to help Tamaqua post a 2-1 victory over Nativity.
Kolbe Robb also had a goal for the Blue Raiders, while Ava Schappell tallied on a penalty kick for the Green Wave.
Tamaqua keeper Cecilia Ulicny made eight saves, while Nativity’s Madison Kramer finished with 30 saves.
Tamaqua is now 5-7, and Nativity is 2-7.
Northwestern-Fleetwood
Fleetwood used an overtime goal to gain a 2-1 non-league victory over Northwestern.
Cammy Fitch scored the only goal for the Tigers, whose record dropped to 9-3-1.
Nazareth-Pleasant Valley
Chloe Guerra and Logan Sauer both had two goals as Nazareth gained a 5-2 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over Pleasant Valley.
The Bears received goals from Riley Green and Hailey Klein, while Sysali Banks had an assist.
PV’s Mya Manigo and Sadie Rizzo shared goalie duties, and both finished with seven saves.
Nazareth improved to 8-2-1, and the Bears fell to 7-4-1.
BOYS SOCCER
Northwestern-Pine Grove
Isaac Frey had two goals and an assist to help Northwestern gain a 6-0 non-league victory over Pine Grove.
Josh Zellner also had two goals, while Cayden Fitch and Matt Johnson each added a goal and an assist.
Northwestern remained undefeated at 13-0, while Pine Grove slipped to 7-4.
Nativity-Tamaqua
Jesus Meza had a hat trick to propel unbeaten Nativity to a 5-1 victory over Tamaqua.
Michael Kadziela also added a goal and an assist for the winners.
Cooper Ansbach scored for the Blue Raiders, with Jacob Schlier providing the assist.
Jonathan Ulicny made 14 saves for Tamaqua, who fell to 4-6 overall. Nativity is now 10-0.
CROSS COUNTRY
PIAA Foundation Invitational
Several area programs took part in the annual invitational at Hershey Park.
Northwestern’s Matt Santana had the area’s best finish with an eighth place among the 288 runners in the 2A classification. The Tigers’ Samuel Bower turned in a 36th-place finish.
In the 1A race, Marian’s Albin Petschauer placed 30th out of 235. Weatherly’s Jacob Parker crossed in 39th place.
Angelina Klein of Northwestern was 54th (out of 233) in the girls’ 2A field. Meanwhile, Marian’s Emma Ashfield was the top girls in the 1A race, finishing in 56th place.
Pine Grove Invitational
The Tamaqua boys and girls teams both earned second place at the Grove Cross Country Invitational.
The Blue Raiders’ Anthony Marchetti and Mia Jones both recorded third-place finishes, while Levi Kunkel was fourth in the boys race.
Samantha Plasha and Isabella Jones added top-10 finishes in the girls competition, placing sixth and 10th respectively.
FIELD HOCKEY
Northwestern-Palisades
Four different players scored goals for Northwestern in a 4-0 Colonial League victory over Palisades.
Brinley Rex, McKenna Burns, Carsyn Van Norman and Olivia Costa all tallied for the Tigers, who also received a pair of assists from Hailey Gober.
Claire Costa and Cara Thomas each chipped in with one assist.
Northwestern improved to 7-4-1, 5-3 in the league, while the Pirates dropped to 3-7-2.
Palmerton-Moravian A,
Moravian Academy edged Palmerton, 3-2, in Colonial League action.
Skylar Kohler and Sydney Frantz tallied for the Blue Bombers, while Kira Houser and Alisyn Green had assists.
The Lions were paced by Megan Dadio’s two goals.
Palmerton goalie Emily Bollinger made six saves, while Moravian’s Alizeh Ali stopped 15 shots.
The Bombers fell to 7-5 overall and 6-4 in the CL. The Lions are now 8-1.
Pleasant Vy.-Stroudsburg
Stroudsburg rolled to a 7-1 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over Pleasant Valley.
Leah Peleaz and Grace Staples both had two goals to lead the Mounties.
The Bears’ only goal came from Heather Todaro.
PV dropped to 2-7-1, while Stroudsburg improved to 7-4.
Lehighton-Salisbury
Salisbury posted a 3-0 non-conference victory over Lehighton.
Kendra Morgan paced the Falcons (8-4-1) with two goals.
Lehighton slipped to 4-7.
Northern Lehigh-Wilson
Wilson remained undefeated by cruising to a 10-1 Colonial League victory over Northern Lehigh.
Ariana Williams had the only goal for the Bulldogs, while Delaney Szwast assisted on the tally.
The loss dropped Northern Lehigh to 0-11 overall and 0-9 in the CL, while Wilson upped its mark to 12-0.
GIRLS TENNIS
Jim Thorpe-Schuylkill Vy.
Jim Thorpe swept singles play to help gain a 6-1 victory over Schuylkill Valley.
Posting those wins were Tara McLean, Hailey Trine, Ashlynn Miller and Chloe Tantala.
The Olympians are now 10-6.

VOLLEYBALL
Coach Jess Tournament
Pleasant Valley participated in the Coach Jess Volleyball Tournament at Northampton High School.
The Bears finished pool play undefeated with wins over Whitehall (25-18, 25-12), Notre Dame-Green Pond (26-24, 25-18) and Jim Thorpe (25-17, 25-9).
In semifinal play, PV dropped a three-set match to Delaware Valley (22-25, 25-23, 15-12) and finished third in the 12-team tournament.
Brianna Bruckman had 30 assists, 23 digs, and two aces for the Bears, while Jackie James ended with 23 digs, 10 assists, seven kills, four aces and three blocks. Nora Jones contributed 19 digs, 18 kills, four aces and two blocks, with Hannah Akob adding 13 digs, 12 kills and two aces.
Northampton knocked off Nazareth in the semis and then defeated Delaware Valley to claim the title.
