St. Luke’s University Health Network and the Tamaqua Public Library are teaming up to offer “History on the Books!” in conjunction with Tamaqua’s annual Heritage Day.
The event will be at the library, 30 S. Railroad St., Tamaqua, at 1 p.m. Oct. 9.
Author Catherine McCafferty and author/historian Mike Piersa will take the audience through the history and creative process behind their illustrated children’s books, “Tug!” and “The Giant Moves.”
Both books explore Bethlehem Steel’s impact from a child’s perspective.
McCafferty, who has written numerous children’s books, brings tow tractor Tug to life as he helps Bethlehem’s steelworkers do their jobs.
Children - and adults - will journey with Tug as he works, and then learns there is more he can do to help even after the steel factory shuts down.
Piersa, the historian for the National Museum of Industrial History, works to preserve and restore equipment from the Bethlehem Steel.
“The Giant Moves,” co-authored with McCafferty, tells of how Bethlehem Steel’s million-pound Whitworth bending press inspires a teen to map out his future.
Both Tug and the enormous bending press now live at the National Museum of Industrial History, which is housed in the former electric repair shop of the Bethlehem Steel plant.
Both books, signed by the authors, will be on sale for $12 each.
