Barnstormers performing at Kunkletown church

The Barnstormers, a four-part men’s singing group, will perform Saturday evening to the sanctuary of St. Matthew’s UCC in Kunkletown,

“During the hour and a half performance, we sing show tunes, sacred music, secular songs and sea chanties,” said Kyle Strohl, a second tenor. “The audience may be familiar with some of the music.”

The concert is free and begins at 7:30 p.m. There is a free will offering basket for donations, which help with music costs.

William C. Davis has been the group’s director since 2007 and Jean Degan is the accompanist on the piano.

“An instrumentalist joins us for four songs during each show. This time it is Tom Hinze, a former music teacher at Palmerton Area School District,” said Hal Eckhart, a baritone singer.

Hinze will play the clarinet and oboe.

The Barnstormers play three shows a year and average 40-50 singers per concert. Their shows are on the East Coast.

Earlier this year, they performed at churches in Rochester, New York, and Bordentown, New Jersey.

Forty-seven singers are set to take the stage in Kunkletown.

Strohl and Eckhart have been performing with the group for decades and are also part of the church choir. Choir director Dan Smale and choir member George Moretz will join them for this performance.

“I like singing with all guys and the camaraderie. My dad was a member, and we sang together for a while,” said Eckhart.

The group only rehearses on concert weekends. They gather Friday afternoon and evening, and Saturday morning. Then the performance is Saturday evening, and those who are able return Sunday morning to perform a few songs during the worship service.

“It’s a great group of guys. You get to the point where you care about each other and reach out when someone has been ill,” said Strohl.

During this week’s worship, Pastor Suzanne Brooks-Cope encouraged the congregation to attend and bring their friends.

“I am looking forward to seeing the audience and hope they are inspired by the night’s music,” said Strohl.

The church address is 102 Church Rd., Kunkletown. Sunday worship is at 9 a.m. in the sanctuary and livestreaming on their Facebook page.
