KeyBank to close Palmerton branch in December

A Palmerton bank will become the next financial institution to shutter its doors later this year.

The KeyBank branch at 372 Delaware Ave. will close at 3 p.m. Dec. 2, according to a letter sent out to customers on Sept. 1.

It will be combined with KeyBank’s Lehighton branch at 904 Blakeslee Boulevard Drive E.

There’s nothing customers need to do, as they can bank at the Lehighton branch, or any other KeyBank branch, according to a letter from Senior Retail Leader Melissa Young.

The original bank building was built by Citizens Bank, before it was morphed into several other bank companies including Harleysville National Bank, as well as First Niagara Bank.

The closing means that just one bank, First Northern is located in the Palmerton borough.

Other KeyBank locations include the Lehigh Township branch at 4421 Lehigh Drive in Walnutport, and the Whitehall branch at 2971 MacArthur Road in Whitehall.

It was announced in May that KeyBank’s branch at 502 Main St., Slatington will be consolidated with its Whitehall branch at 271 MacArthur Road on Dec. 2, according to Karen Crane, senior communications manager.

Crane said a letter was sent out on May 19 to its Slatington branch clients notifying them of the consolidation.

Nearby KeyBank branches are located at 4421 Lehigh Drive in Walnutport and 904 Blakeslee Blvd. Drive E. in Lehighton.

KeyBank’s Slatington branch is the latest in a long line of branches set to close locally since the pandemic began.

On the same stretch, Wells Fargo & Co. closed its 541 Main St., Slatington, branch Aug. 3.

KeyBank’s Kresgeville Branch at 543 Interchange Road closed on April 1, with all customer accounts automatically transferred to KeyBank’s Lehighton Branch at 904 Blakeslee Blvd. Drive E. The Kresgeville building remains closed.

BB&T Bank closed its branch office at 330 Delaware Ave., Palmerton, on July 20, 2021 and was consolidated into the BB&T Walnutport branch at 500 Main St. That iconic building, which once held a popular thermometer, is being turned into an independent pharmacy.
