Walnutport

A Walnutport resident wants to know why the borough’s volleyball court is barely used.

Donald Eckhart asked borough council on Thursday why a promising endeavor appears to have gone flat.

“How did we get to the state of (inactivity) in that period of time?” Eckhart asked. “I was thrilled recently; there was actually six people playing; why is it happening like that?”

Eckhart said the volleyball courts at Bryfogle Park and Eagles Nest Park are busy while the borough’s court lags behind.

“Why isn’t anything happening like that here?” he asked.

Eckhart said he checked the other volleyball courts to see what type of sand they had, which he brought in containers for council to see.

“Their sand is very different from the sand we have here,” Eckhart said. “The reason we don’t have volleyball here is because we don’t have the right kind of sand.”

Councilman David Stankovic didn’t disagree with Eckhart’s point of contention.

“It’s got to be changed for next year,” Stankovic said. “It’s as hard as a rock.”

Borough grant coordinator Michael Wentz said it’s the same sand that Lehigh Township used at its park, and said it came from the same place.

Eckhart said he understood, but said there’s no way if he had kids that he’d let them play on the borough’s court.

Stankovic reiterated that something needs to be done.

“We’ve got to do something about it,” he said. “Or people are going to get hurt.”

Councilman Michael Gaston said council should look at the situation at in the 2023 budget.

“Build it into next year’s budget,” Gaston said. “It wouldn’t even be feasible to think about doing it now.”

Council President William Turk told Eckhart the borough will address the situation at that time.

“We’ll get it going for next year,” Turk said. “At least you got the answer why people aren’t playing there.”

Eckhart had made a $2,000 donation toward a volleyball court.

Wentz previously said the sand is beach sand, and added everything was donated and paid for, and that all the work was done in house.
