Local Roundup: Results from Sept. 10
Northwestern’s Samuel Bower captured the boys championship at the Centaur Invitational cross country meet to highlight Saturday’s scholastic sports action.

Centaur Invitational
Several local programs traveled to DeSales University to take part in the annual Centaur Invitational.
Northwestern’s Samuel Bower finished first on the boys’ side in a time of 16:39.00. The Tigers’ Matthew Santana and Palmerton’s Owen Hibell placed third and fourth, respectively. Hibell’s brother Connor also grabbed a top-10 finish, placing seventh.
Among the other area teams competing, Jordan Remmell paced Jim Thorpe with a 12th-place finish, Albin Petschauer led Marian with a 17th-place finish, Jacob Parker was the top Weatherly runner in 23rd, Owen Serfass led Lehighton with a 25th- place finish, and Levi Kunkel topped Tamaqua with a 27th-place finish.
In the girls event, Northwestern’s Angelina Klein was the top local runner with a 10th-place finish. Tiger teammate Sophia Cornell was 17th.
Emma Rex (Palmerton, 20th), Emma Heil (Northern Lehigh, 25th), Mia Jones (Tamaqua, 37th) and Emma Ashfield (Marian, 48th) also earned top spots for their respective teams.
BOYS SOCCER
Marian-Lehighton
Ten different players scored as Lehighton ran away with a 12-0 victory over Marian.
AJ Light and Matt Sofranko paced the Indians’ attack as they both recorded two goals and an assist.
Jacob Hall, Jacob Anthony, Jaxson Strauss and Ever Schaeffer, Jesse Waksmunski, Gabe Reed, Levi Monk and Mason Nailer all contributed single scores for Lehighton. Hall had two assists, while Anthony, Strauss, Scheffer, Nic Yaro, Avery Hosler and Mason Marchessault all added one assist.
Lehighton improves to 6-1 overall (2-1 SL), while Marian falls to 0-4-1 (0-2) on the season.
Northwestern-Jim Thorpe
It was a memorable day for Josh Zellner and Matt Johnson as the Northwestern duo both put themselves in the program’s record book during a 10-0 non-league victory over Jim Thorpe.
Zellner and Johnson both became a part of the Northwestern boys soccer 100-point club. Zellner had three goals and three assists, while Johnson added three goals and one assist.
Jack Mauro, Jacob Van Lierop, Logan Mesics and Isaac Frey all added single scores for the Tigers, while Mauro, van Lierop, Cayden Fitch and Zachary Grim each added assists.
Tamaqua-Catasauqua
Tamaqua’s rally fell short as Catasauqua held on for a 3-2 non-league victory.
The Roughies led 3-0, before the Blue Raiders came to life on second-half goals from Cooper Ansbach and Jack Tharp, but the rally came up just short. Nicholas Barron and Ethan DeBonifazio both had assists for Tamaqua.
Blue Raiders’ goalie Jonathan Ulicny made 10 saves.
FIELD HOCKEY
Wilson-Northwestern
Wilson handed Northwestern its first loss of the season, edging the Tigers 4-3 in Colonial League action.
Hannah Gober, Liv Costa and Carsyn Van Norman all scored goals for the Tigers, while Brinley Rex was credited with an assist.
The Tigers’ keeper Gabby Gober finished with 11 saves.
Northwestern slips to 3-1-1 overall (2-1 CL), while Wilson remains undefeated at 6-0 (3-0).
GIRLS SOCCER
Blue Mountain-Jim Thorpe
Jim Thorper remained undefeated with a 2-1 Schuylkill League win over Blue Mountain.
Danika Bolinsky got the Blue Eagles on the board first, but the Olympians’ Riley Rushatz knotted things up early in the second half. Kennedy Rider then scored the game-winner at the 37:08 mark. Mackenzie Yuhas was credited with the assists on both Olympian goals.
Jim Thorpe moves to 5-0 overall (3-0 SL), while Blue Mountain slides to 2-3 (2-2) on the season.
North Schuylkill-Lehighton
Four first-half goals propelled Lehighton to a 6-1 Schuylkill League victory over North Schuylkill.
Charli McHugh had three goals and an assist for the Indians.
Leah Uyvari, Ryleigh Walker and Myee Lutsko all also had goals for Lehighton. Sadie Monk added two assists, while Madylin Wolter had one assist for the Indians, who improved to 4-2 overall, and 2-1 in league play.
Lehighton goalie Ciara Berhel made four saves.
Marian-Tamaqua
Tamaqua got its first win of the season, rolling to a 9-0 non-league victory over Marian.
In the first-ever varsity soccer meeting between the two programs, Sarah Hope sparked the Blue Raiders with three goals. Kimmy Rudy added two goals and an assist, while Megan Lavine, Katie Fredericks, Alexis Bowman and Isabella Fort all posted single scores. Tamaqua assists were also credited to Ava Agosti, Kolbe Robb and Taylor Wargo.
Blue Raiders’ goalie Cecilia Ulicny grabbed five saves, while her Fillies’ counterpart Gracie Gallagher finished with 16 saves.
LLA-Tamaqua
In their second game of the day, Tamaqua rolled to an 8-0 non-league victory over Lincoln Leadership Academy.
The Blue Raiders’ trio of Sarah Hope, Megan Lavine and Isabella Fort all finished with two goals, while Kimmy Rudy added a goal and three assists.
Christina Modesto added a single score for the Blue Raiders, while Abby Leinbach and Taylor Wargo both were credited with two assists.
GIRLS TENNIS
Bangor-Jim Thorpe
Bangor snuck past Jim Thorpe, 4-3.
Tara McLean and Hailey Trine posted singles’ play victories for the Olympians. McLean then paired with Keira Reese to add a doubles victory.
Jim Thorpe falls to 3-4 overall, while Bangor moves to 4-2.
